In this activity, students will learn how gravity
affects weight and mass. At the end of the activity,
students will turn in the Activity Worksheet they will
fill out while completing the Gizmo activity.
Students will start this activity by answering Prior
Knowledge Questions on the Student Exploration
worksheet on the website.
Then they will follow the instructions on the
worksheet explaining how to use this Gizmo to
compare weight and mass of objects and answer
them in the Warm-Up section. Students will use
the objects on the Gizmo (dogs, baseball, pumpkin,
flower pot) and place them on one side of the scale.
On the other side, they will place the pre-measured
weights to balance out the scale. With this trial and
error process, they will start to comprehend weight
in a visual manner.
The following section is Activity A in which they will
compare the weight on different planets using the
virtual spring scale in the Gizmo. They will answer
the questions in the section predicted the weight,
collecting data, and analyzing it.
Activity B is the next section. In this section,
students will follow the instructions of this section
to test mass on different planets. They will predict,
collect, and analyze data to reinforce the lesson.
Extension is the final section of this Gizmo in which
 the students will be exploring the force of gravity
using the virtual scales. After predicting, collecting,
and calculating data, they will complete the
worksheet that they will turn in after completing the
activity.
There is also a vocabulary sheet on the website.
They will study these words that will be on the next
quiz or test in which they will have to match the
definition with the word.
