Classroom Behavior Plan

On the first day of school, the students and I discuss our classroom rules and the behaviors needed for success
throughout the school year. Our five classroom rules will be the basis from which they earn positive and negative
consequences for their behavior. Classroom behavior will be monitored with a color chart in which students move
clothespins when making exceptionally good choices (move up) or when needing redirection from the teacher (move
down). Every student begins a new day on green! The values for each color are as follows:

Purple Pink Blue Green Yellow Orange Red

students will record their color. I ask that parents please view and initial this chart nightly!

Classroom Rules:
1. Listen when your teacher is talking.
2. Follow directions quickly.
3. Respect others, respect yourself, & respect your school.
4. Raise your hand to speak or stand.
5. Be safe, be kind, and be honest.

Possible Positive Consequences:

Success without a material reward
Verbal or written praise
Moving up on the Behavior Chart
Earning jewels for the clothespin

Possible Negative Consequences:

Verbal redirection or warning
A note or phone call home
A visit to the principal
Conferences with the teacher

Every day students will have an opportunity to start fresh and to be able to work their way up the chart again.

Classroom Philosophy

My ideal classroom is a place where students feel comfortable, safe, and valued. It is a space
where students feel excited to learn and interested in learning. It is also a room where colleagues
stop by to collaborate and reflect upon the education we provide to the students. In order to
create my ideal classroom, I will work hard to create a respectful classroom environment conducive
to student-centered learning and teacher collaboration.

It is important for me to create a safe and welcoming classroom environment. From the first
day of school, I will establish rules and procedures that highlight respect and open-mindedness in
the English classroom. The established procedures will ensure that students feel safe during
activities such as class discussions. Through class discussions students will get to know each others
ideas and value different opinions and ways of thinking. In my classroom there will be discussions
where students express connections to texts we are reading, connections to the world and society
around us, or connections to other media. All of these connections are personal to the speaker and
when students share their thoughts in a classroom setting and their peers respond in a respectful
and thoughtful manner, it creates a classroom environment where it is then safe to continue to do
so. A safe and respectful classroom environment is a place where students feel valued in their
learning atmosphere.

Once the students feel comfortable in the classroom, it can become a room where students
become responsible and interested in their education. This learning atmosphere is created through
student-centered learning strategies. Activities and procedures that place students at the central
focus are the core of my daily lessons. Activities like student led discussion and individualized
projects. It is also important to think of different ways to make materials and ideas relevant to
students. These student-centered learning strategies will ensure that students are invested in
their learning, and therefore there will be less behavioral issues and classroom distractions. The
students will truly feel valued and respected. Students should be the focus in every classroom and
student-centered learning allows the students to be the central focus every day. Student-centered
learning will generate an interest in learning that lends to a desire to become lifelong learners.

Lifelong learning is important to teachers as well. I plan to learn and grow professionally
through collaboration with my colleagues. At times, the saying two heads are better than one is
extremely true. The benefits of teacher collaboration are endless. When teachers work together
to develop curriculum the scope and sequence flow together for every grade level. All teachers
understand the overall desired learning standards and outcomes and can develop instructional
strategies to reach those goals. These benefits and more are why I have come to value
collaboration through my early teaching experiences.

The classroom environment, students, and collaboration with colleagues are essential elements
needed to create my ideal classroom. My ideal classroom is a place where students feel valued,
welcomed, and become genuinely interested in learning. It is also a place where students are the
focus as student-centered learning techniques and strategies are incorporated into daily lesson
plans. Lastly, it is a place where colleagues are invited to help improve teaching practices and
support long term learning goals.
