evidence supporting the connections.

Have quick write prompt ready
- Winnie says that she wants to make a difference in the world. What do
you think she means? What do you think it means to make a difference in the
world?
Create expectations for quick writes to discuss with students
Materials:
Tuck Everlasting Book
Google Slides slide
ELA notebooks/journals

Student Prior Knowledge:

- Events of the previous chapters
- What the three seemingly unrelated events in the story are
- What context clues are/how to use them

Assessment Plan:
- Combination of:
- Listening to student discussions before, during, and after
reading
- The student created quiz questions- what events in the
chapter did students find particularly important?
- The quick write at the end of the lesson

Instructional Procedures:
Before we start reading:
Review the three things that happened that there appeared at first to be no connection
between:
1) At dawn, Mae Tuck set out on her horse for Treegap to meet her
sons (ch 2)
2) At noon, Winnie Foster decided to think about running away (ch 3)
3) At sunset, a stranger appeared at the Fosters gate looking for
someone (ch 4)

Discuss what weve read so far (what happened last time we read?)
- Who was the stranger was looking for?
- Pg 18 Forever, the man echoed thoughtfully
- Pg 19 Im looking for someone. A family.
- What did we learn about the elf music?
- Pg 20 I do believe its come again, after all these years!
Thats the elf music I told you about. Why its been ages since I heard it
last. And this is the first time youve ever heard it, isnt it?
- How old is Winnie? How long has
it been since Winnies grandma has heard what she believes
to be elf music?
- Pg 21 Winnie says It sounds like a music box,

While reading:
- Personification (the sun opening its eye)
- Context clues: what does galling mean? (humiliating/embarrassing,
annoying)
- Context clues: what does consolingly mean? (comfort, reassure)
- Metaphor (heavy morning)
- Pg 25- what is the significance of the tree? Who might the boy be?
- Pg 27- why does the boy (Jesse Tuck) relax a little when Winnie says that
its her wood and she can come there any time she wants?

Stop at sticky note on page 27

- Remind kids to pay attention to what Jesse Tuck says, think about why its
important
- He tells Winnie how old he is (104, but she thinks hes being
silly. Is he?)
- He wont let Winnie drink from the spring (why?)
- Groups should also discuss Mae Tucks comment at the end of the
chapter.

In groups finish reading chapter 5

As a group talk about what youve read, create a quiz question

Before they move/split into groups:

- Create a group quiz question
- Stick the sticky note with your quiz question on the back board
