LOGIC

Logic: A Necessity

Question 1. Give a logical explanation for the heat island effect.

Question 2. Expound logical reasons for the sudden increase of ADHD cases in children.

Question 3. Write the logical solutions for the set of problems given below.

LOGICAL. The professor or the instructor neither asks for an explanation, a reason nor a
solution alone, there is a qualifying term before each mentioned word- that is logical.

What does the term logical mean? Logical, as defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is an
adjective pertaining to something capable of reasoning or of using reason in an orderly cogent
fashion or something in accordance with logic. This then brings us to the question, What is logic?
This question was already answered in the first meetings of this class. Logic is the science and art of
correct (and incorrect) reasoning. However, this piece is not to simply define the terms logical and logic
itself, rather to expound its importance.

First, notice that questions given during examinations, like those given earlier, have the term
logical. Basically, this implies the necessity of having correct and sound answers, solutions or
explanations for questions, phenomena and problems sets. In the academe, students are expected to learn
how to properly or correctly think and reason. Students are guided to understand theories and principles to
logically explain real-life situations. For example, a student may give an answer to a given mathematical
question however; the answer was incorrect and without a proper solution. He did give an answer but he
was not able to arrive at the correct answer since there was either no mathematical system or proper
equation followed or the system or process was not correctly carried out. Just like in the study of Logic, if
one would not adhere to the rules, his or her argument cannot be deemed as true or false.

Second, in the real world, misunderstandings arise from peoples various definitions or meanings
of a term. But, if one understands the basics of logic, these misunderstandings can be minimized. Logic
covers the study of terms, their aspects (connotation and denotation) and classifications. Simply the use of
right terms at the right situations.

Third, the greater part of logic is concerned with the validity of arguments, the truthfulness of an
argument, and the fallacy of a statement. All these are fundamental in the study and application of law
(especially in court). A lawyer himself must be a logical person to appropriately present the evidences,
easily win arguments and properly defend his client. Logic is essential both for the lawyers career and
the clients fate.

These are only few of the applications and implied importance of logic. Clich it may sound, but
logic is everywhere, it is anywhere. Its application and importance run from the biggest cases in Senate
and court hearings down to the mechanics of how a calculator works. Logic is an imperative in the
academe, the corporate world and almost everywhere.
