Lesson Procedure: This lesson will cover a variety of things, we will focus on main idea, context
clues, and womens history. The students will watch a video on context clues and then learn a new
strategy for determining the main idea of a text. They will then apply this knowledge to the
passage Amelia Earharts last chapter was as a heroic castaway. We will talk about womens
history and then the students will be asked to use context clues for any unfamiliar words and
determine the main idea.

Class Activity/Tasks

Guided Practice: Start by engaging the students with the flocabulary video on context
clues. I will then introduce a new strategy about main idea. I will draw the Main Idea
House on the board and explain the importance of each piece, the topic, main idea, and
supporting pieces. Show the students the BrainPop video on Main Idea. Pause the video
and have the students look at the articles in the video and apply it to the Main Idea House.

Independent Practice: Now that we have practiced the skill together, allow the students to
do it on their own. Introduce womens history to the students. Have the students read the
Amelia Earharts last chapter was as a heroic castaway article. Ask them to read the
article and chunk every two paragraphs while also having them underline any unfamiliar
words. Then have the students pull out their reading notebooks and use their context clue
skills to find and record the meaning of their words. Have students make a Main Idea
House on a sticky note and apply it to the article on Amelia Earhart.
