Need as an auxiliary verb and an
ordinary verb
APRIL 19, 2014 -

Need is used both as a principal verb and as an auxiliary:

When need is used as a principal verb, it means require.

He needs my help.

We need two more players for the team.

We have got what we need.

He needed some more time to decide the question.

When need is used as an auxiliary verb, its form remains the same whatever be the
number or person of the subject. The auxiliary need is common in questions and
negatives.

He need not ask my permission.

He need not wait any longer.

They need not make such a fuss over it.

You need not mention this to anyone else.

Sometimes it is used with hardly:

I need hardly say that I am very grateful.

We need hardly remind you of your promise to visit us.

I need hardly add that you are always welcome.

It can be used with only:

He need only say what he wants and it will be granted.

You need only sign this form and I shall do the rest.

I need only add that we shall always remain indebted to you for your help.
Need is usually used in questions without not.

Need he wait any longer?

Need I come again?

He need not wait any longer, need he?

If the answer is in the negative, we will say:

No, he / you / they need not.

But if the answer is in the positive, you should say:

Yes, he /she / you must.

The opposite of need not in such a context is not need but must.

Need without not is also used in the following kinds of statements:

You need pay only 20 dollars.

I dont think we need copy all these figures.

There need be no further correspondence on this matter.

The expressions well before and well after are used to emphasize that a period of time
is long.

grammatical properties are different.

Well is an adverb. It is usually used to modify a verb. In this case, well goes after the
verb.

She sings well.

A good singer sings well. (Here the adjective good modifies the noun singer and the
adverb well modifies the verb sings.)
Compound adjectives
Well is used for making several compound adjectives. These adjectives usually appear
with a hyphen. Example: well-known

To internalize as many phrasal verbs as possible. (The most common ones first)
For every phrasal verb to know some of its diferent meanings.

That being said, you dont have to stress if you dont know a lot of phrasal verbs.
Dont worry, you just have to keep working on phrasal verbs on a regular basis.
Its an accumulative process and if you keep learning them you are going to improve sooner than you
think.

What You Have To Do

All your comments are very welcome!!!

Why Is So Difficult To Learn Phrasal Verbs

There are hundreds of phrasal verbs. To reach a good English level you have to learn at least the
most common ones.
But the problem is that phrasal verbs are not an easy stuf to learn

As an example, you know pretty well the meaning of the verb to run, but do you know what to run
out means?

To runI run five miles every morning.

To run outI have to go to the food store because we ran out of sugar and milk.

As you can see, its not obvious to guess the meaning of To run out even if you know the meaning
of the verb to run.
Summary: Phrasal verbs are so difficult because

1. There are lots of them.

2. Its often difficult to guess its meaning.
3. One given phrasal verbs can have diferent meanings.
4. Some phrasal verbs can be separated (Ill call John back) while some other cant (I run sugar
out > I run out of sugar).
5. There are two words phrasal verbs (Give back), there are also three words phrasal verbs
(Come up with).

Phrasal verbs are not easy to learn and moreover not easy to internalize and use in a natural way.

The Strategy Im Using To Learn Phrasal Verbs

When I decided it was time to learn phrasal verbs, my first idea was to memorize from 3 to 5 news
phrasal verbs every day.
After thinking twice about this strategy I thought it wasnt the best one. Its very difficult to memorize
them because as you learn new ones you forget the older ones.
I thought of a way to internalize phrasal verbs by using them every day.

Lets see the strategy in detail

For 30 days in a row you are going to

1. Pick up a new phrasal verb every day.

2. Check its meaning.
3. Write a sentence using it
4. Write a new sentence for all the phrasal verbs you learned the previous days.

That means that

Day 1 You are going to write one sentence.

Day 2 You are going to write two sentence.
Day3 You are going to write three sentence.
and so on until
Day 30 You are going to write thirty sentences!!!

After 30 days you can stop and then start again from day 1 with new phrasal verbs.
A Practical Example Of The Strategy
Day 1

You Pick up a new To run out

phrasal verb

You check its To have none left or To exit rapidly.

meaning

You Write a sentence I ran out of gas and I had to leave my car in
the side of the road and walk to the nearest
gas station.

Day 2

You pick up a new To get up

phrasal verb

You check its To rise in the morning from sleep or To stand.

meaning

You write a sentence I usually get up at 7 AM.

You write a new When I saw the fire I ran out leaving behind all
sentence for all the my belongings.
previous phrasal
verbs you learnt

Day 3

You pick up a new To keep away

phrasal verb

You check its To stay at a distance

meaning

You write a sentence Please keep the children away from the pool
because they dont know how to swim yet.

You write a new Whenever I run out of milk I drink tea for
sentence for all the breakfast. Please get up from the sofa and
previous phrasal help me because Im not going to do all the
verbs you learnt household chores.

And so onuntil day 30.

How Are We Going To Learn Phrasal Verbs?

What am I going to do?

I will start using this strategy from today and for 30 days in a row.
If you want to follow my progression, Im going to publish my daily work on phrasal verbs in a daily
basis on:

What are you going to do?

You also have to start using this strategy right now.
You have to commit to work your phrasal verbs for 30 days in a row.
If after 30 days you feel that you are internalizing them, then start again from day 1 with new phrasal
verbs.
Doing all this you are going to learn, and even more important, to use phrasal verbs in a natural way.
And Remember

Are you going to use this strategy?

Is this strategy helping you to learn phrasal verbs?

30 days in a row learning phrasal verbs Second part

I also want to share with you a very brief summary of the 30 phrasal verbs I worked with during 30
days in a row.

Remember that you can find an extensive summary of my Phrasal verbs learning process in the
post 30 days in a row learning phrasal verbs

If you want to know more about the strategy I used, you can also read the next post The most
effective strategy to learn phrasal verbs

How I Worked With Phrasal Verbs

I chose these 30 phrasal verbs at random:

Day Phrasal Meanings

1 Blow up Explode
Inflate
Lose your temper, become angry

2 Bring up Mention
Raise a child

3 Run out Have none left

Exit rapidly

4 Call of Cancel

6 Give back Return something that someone has
borrowed or lost

7 Give away Give something without asking for anything

in exchange

8 Make up Invent a story

9 Put away Return to the proper place of storage

Save

10 Hang up End a phone call

Suspend clothes on a hanger

11 Throw Discard something when no longer needed

danger

26 Turn away Avert ones gaze

27 Go out Take part in social activities (usually at night)

Leave a place

28 Pass out Faint, lose consciousness

29 Set up Establish, found

Assemble

30 Grow up Become adult / Mature

As you can see I didnt work with all the diferent meanings that every phrasal verb have.

I think that the most important is:

To internalize as many phrasal verbs as possible. (The most common ones first)
For every phrasal verb to know some of its diferent meanings.

That being said, you dont have to stress if you dont know a lot of phrasal verbs.
Dont worry, you just have to keep working on phrasal verbs one day after another.
Its an accumulative process and if you keep learning them you are going to improve sooner than you
think.

About Making Mistakes

If you followed my progression while learning phrasal verbs, you could see that I made some
mistakes.
Its ok to make mistakes. You are going to correct some of them afterwards by yourself or because
someone tells you.

Some examples of the mistakes I made

1. As I always write quickly I wrote in some occasions Call of instead of Call off. Its a
mistake that Im not going to make again.
2. I also wrongly used the phrasal verb Hand up instead of just the verb Hang. In the past
they used to hang up thieves. > In the past they used to hang thieves.
I hope that these diferent posts about phrasal verbs are going to inspire you and motivate you to
learn them because they are very common when speaking or writing (informal).

And Remember
Are you going to work your phrasal verbs like me?
Do you use a diferent strategy?

How to learn phrasal verbs easily

Ive already written many posts about how to learn phrasal verbs easily.
Many blog readers have also sent me emails about their problems with phrasal verbs. They feel kind
of frustrated and dont know how to learn them.

Phrasal verbs are indeed a big issue among English learners because:
There are lots of them.
Some of them have even diferent meanings.
Its difficult to guess what they mean even if you know every word in it.
Ex: Run out of Have none left.
Then what to do and not to do about phrasal verbs?

English Learners Vs Phrasal Verbs

While reading my blog readers emails something struck me!
I bet that you already know how an English learner feel when you came across a new phrasal verb
You dont like them.
You feel lost whenever you run into a new one.
You really dont know how to learn phrasal verbs easily.

Thats pretty demotivating, isnt?

But
What can you do about it?
How To Learn Phrasal Verbs The Wrong Way?
First Wrong strategy:
Some English learners have told me that they try to learn phrasal verbs like this

Phrasal Verbs With To Come Phrasal Verbs With To Run

-Come out -Run out
-Come along -Run along
-Come down -Run down

My opinion:That kind of phrasal verbs groups dont make any sense and are anything but useful.

Second Wrong strategy:

Some others blog readers told me that they used to make this other kind of groups

Phrasal Verbs With Up Phrasal Verbs With Down

-Speak up -Come down
-Fill up -Look down
-Set up -Set down

My opinion:Once again, this lists arent helping them at all.

If youre also following these kinds of strategies just forget them.

Theyre doing more harm than good to your English improvement.

You dont feel overwhelmed, do you?

One word Run
Two words run into
Three words Run out of

No matter how many words they have in it, they are still verbs!!!

The most common phrasal verbs to learn in English

Phrasal verbs are difficult to learn but still very important to master because English natives use
them a lot. If you want to speak English well you have to know and use at least some of the most
common phrasal verbs.

As I told you in my post How to learn phrasal verbs easily, you have to avoid trying to memorize
phrasal verbs using nonsense associations.
That being said, there is a way of making natural associations of phrasal verbs that are going to help
you a lot. And I do say, and mark my words Natural associations.
How To Make Natural Associations Of Phrasal Verbs
Whenever you come across a new phrasal verb, you have to think if there is any other phrasal verbs
than can go with it.

As an example:
The phrasal verb Sit down makes me think about the phrasal verb Stand up.
If ISpeed up in the motorway, chances are that a Police car is going to Pull me over.

As you can see, I to try to connect Phrasal verbs that go together. Phrasal verbs that have something
in common.
These kinds of associations are going to help you to use the most common phrasal verbs naturally in
very specific contexts.

Let me share with you some others examples of natural association of common phrasal verbs that
are helping me a lot

Some Common Phrasal Verbs Groups

bus stop and then dropped him of at her home.

Come down with Get over

Whenever I come down with a cold, I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables in order to get over as soon as
possible.

Break down Cheer up

The little girl broke down when his father scolded her, but she cheered up when he gave her some
candy.
Speed up Pull over
If you speed up too much when driving dont be surprised if the police pull you over and then fine
you.

Speak up Shut up
If I dont hear you when you speak because theres too much noise around us I would ask you to
speak up. But if you speak too loud and you are really bothering me, Ill be rude and say to you to

You take of your clothes before having a shower and you then put them on after the shower.

Sit down Stand up

When the judge enters the court everybody has to stand up. Once the judge is on his seat everybody
can sit down.

As Im sharing with you in my series of posts The 9 basic pillars to speak English well, if you
want to really improve your English speaking level, you have to work on your pronunciation, your
intonationamong many others things.

But even when you master all that, if you want to reach the next speaking level, you still need
something more

Its time for you to start using words and expressions that are going to make your English to sound
better!

Lets see how you can speak English like a native

To Speak Or Not To Speak English Like A Native

I bet that when you listen to native English speakers youre able to catch words and expressions that
make their English to sound more genuine, more real, more natural, more authentic
These words and expressions are maybe not common in your native language or even dont exist at
all.

To show you what Im talking about, lets first build a basic sentence and then see how you can
dress it in order to go from very basic English to a little more sophisticated English.

1. Basic English
You canceled the weeding and I also think it was the best option. Dont feel bad because
it wasnt your fault!

2. A little more sophisticated English

I totally agree with you about calling off the weeding. Actually you have to keep your chin up
because you are not the one to blame!

As you can see, While both sentences are grammatically correct and can be easily understood, there
is a big diference between them:

1. The first sentence sounds too basic or even a little clumsy.

2. The second one sounds a lot more like a native English speakers sentence.

If you make the efort to add common words and expressions to your English, you are going to make
a giant step toward speaking English like a native.

How You Can Speak English Like A Native

From now on, whenever you listen to an English speaker, you have to

1. Try to catch common words and expressions that you are not currently using.
2. Write them down and keep them in a list.
3. On a regular basis build your own sentences using them.
4. Little by little try to use them whenever you are speaking to someone in English.

At first youre going to feel your speaking unnatural, too fancy or even ridicule because you are not
used to these words and expressions that are uncommon to you. But you have to keep using them
until one day you wont need to think about them anymore because they are going to be part of your
speaking.
Someone Who Speak English Like A Native
I have been looking for a real example to show you how an English learner uses these words and
expressions in a naturally.
I came across a very nice video on YouTube by a Girl called Theresa.

Before going any further, let me congratulate Theresa for her awesome video that radiates deep
passion for learning new languages! She also shares very useful tips about how you can improve
your English.

Coming back to our topic, through Theresas video on YouTube you can see how an English
learner (like her) uses common English words and expressions in her speaking.
I guess that in the past she consciously made the efort to use these words and expressions.
Because of that, nowadays she uses them without even thinking and as a result her English sounds
so natural, so genuine..so awesome!!!

Lets make a brief list of some of the words and expressions that make Theresas English sound so
good!

A bit tricky, A little tricky

Totally
A bunch of
No way to
Kind of
Whatever
Actually
For, you know
Luckily
To be honest
Eventually
To double check
Once a day
First of all
Definitely
The olderthe hardest
You DO need, you DO have
After all
Chances are
Obviously
Here is the good news
Personally
Suits you the best

She also uses phrasal verbs that are very common in English

To go ahead
To look up
To write down
To get into
To figure out
To look up
To put out
To pick up
To came across

Now, try to picture Theresa making the same speech without using the words and expressions I
listed above It wouldnt be so nice to listen to her, would it?
Those words and expressions make Theresas English to stand out.

I hope that now you totally agree with me that you do need to add this kind of words and
expressions to your English too!!!

Lets finish this post by congratulating both

1. TheresaFor her awesome video and English speaking level!

2. YouBecause from now on, you are going to use new words and expressions in order
to speak English like a native!
And Remember

Are you going to use this strategy?

Do you know any other tips to improve your speaking?
All your comments are very welcome!!!

For native English speakers to stress the correct words in a sentence is not a big deal. They dont
even have to think about it because they do it unconsciously.

I bet that if you ask an English speaker to tell you The basic rules of sentence stress, he or shes
going to answer you Well humsorryI dont know. I just do it!

Its the same for you in your native tongue. You dont plan beforehand how you are going to stress a
given sentence. You dont ask for a minute to prepare your speaking.
You just speak and dont even know the rules you use to stress words in a sentence because its
quite natural for you.
The Most Important Rule About Sentence Stress
We, English learners, didnt have the change to be in contact with the English language since our
childhood.
Then its not obvious for us to know how to stress the correct words in a sentence.

The first rule and the most important one is

Forget about applying the patterns you use in your native tongue into English.
Its the most common mistakes between English learners.

When you speak in English you have to forget about any other language that you speak. You have to
switch your brain, mouth and ears to English mode.

How To Stress Sentences In English

First of all, you need to clearly diferentiate in every sentence between Important
words (content words) and non important words (function words).
Content words are

Nouns
Verbs
Adjectives
Adverts
Negative contractions (wont, cant, isnt)

Function words are

Articles
Pronouns
prepositions
Auxiliary verbs

You usually have to stress content words and not stress (or even distress) function words.

The bigger stress is on the last content word of a sentence. This word is also called the focus word.

This is what makes English to sound like it sounds. And because you dont do that your English
maybe doest sound good.

Some easy examples

I LIKE your CAR.

My FRIEND is LIVING in LONDON.
Id LIKE to BUY a COMPUTER.

As you can se as a basic rule you stress important words (nouns, verbs) and you dont stress or
distress non important words (pronouns,prepositions)

Breaking The Rules Of Sentence Stress

When you speak you always want to convey a certain meaning. Sometimes you are going to break
the rules above in order to be able to convey a specific meaning.

Im going to show this with an example.

As you are going to see, even thought I told you that the strees is usually in the last content word of a
sentence, if you want or need to convey a diferent meaning you can stress other words in a sentence
(even function words)

Imagine that you meet a friend (whos a little deaf) and you are talking about his new car

Dialogue Explanation

You: I like your CAR. This is the common stress pattern of

the sentence. You stress the last
focus words of the sentence car

Him: What car do you like?

You: I like YOUR car. you are stressing a content word but
you do that because you want your
friend to understand that its his car
that you like and not another ones
car.

Him: What do you think about

my new car?

You: I LIKE your car. Here you stress the verb that is a
focus word but not the last one,
because you want to make quite
clear that you LIKE your friends car.

Him: Who do you say that likes

my car?

You: I like your car. This because you want to make

quite clear thats you and not
another one who likes your friends
car.

3 basic steps to improve your sentence stress

If you follow the next 3 basic steps for a while, you are going to end stressing sentence naturally
almost like native English speakers do.

What To Do Next
When speaking in English there is a LOT of linking between words.
Its something that its maybe not common in your native language but if you want to reduce your
accent and improve your English rhythm you have to link words whenever needed.
Listen carefully to a native English speaker.
They dont speak like this
I like it a lot. (word, pause, word, pause, word, pause)

Its something more like this

I likita lot. (there are some words that are linked or blended)

Lets see how you can master connected speech and move your English speaking to the next
level!

Im going to show you the four basic link groups

Linking Consonant To Vowel

Whenever a word ends with a consonant sound and the next word starts with a vowel you have to
link them and pronounce them as a word.

You have to stop it right now. > You have to stopit right now.
I love it very much. > I lovit very much.
Wake up right now! > Wakup right now!
Some of them live abroad. > Somof them livabroad.
Im going to explain it in the meeting. > Im going to explainitin the meeting.
We worked on it all day long. > We workonitall day long
Can I have a cup of tea? > Cani hava cupof tea?

Linking Consonant To Consonant

Whenever a word ends with a consonant and the next word starts with the same consonant you have
to link them and only pronounce the consonant once.

Shes wearing a red dress. > Shes wearing a redress.

It was the last time I saw him. > It was the lastime I saw him.
You look cool today! > You lookool today!
My university has a book club. > My university has a booklub.
I Went to Paris many times in the past. > I Wento Paris many times in the past.
What time is it? > Whatime is it?

Linking Vowel To Vowel

Whenever a word ends with a vowel and the next word start with a vowel you have to link them by
adding a /y/ or a /w/.
We add a sound to make the connection with two words easier and more natural

Its the end. > Its the_y_end.

Do it right now! > Do_w_it right now!
Stop talking or go out. > Stop talking or go_w_out.
Who is it? > Who_w_is it
Dont go away because I need you. > Dont go_w_away because I need you.
Its too early to go out.> Its too_w_early to go_w_out.
I am very happy. > I_y_am very happy.

Its easy to know if you have to use a /y/ or a /w/ because when you try to add it, one of them fells
natural while the other sounds awful, unnatural.
Linking Between Words
Theres even linking between words when there are two vowels side by side.

reunion > re_y_union

client > cli_y_ent
diet > di_y_et
cooperate > co_w_operate
graduate > gradu_w_ate
coersion > co_w_ersion
fluent > flu_w_ent
evaluate > evalu_w_ate
quiet > qui_y_et

Master Connected Speech By Using It

At first its not easy to use connected speech. You have to think about it and force yourself to link
words whenever needed.

Start by using easy sentences and repeat them as much as possible. If you keep doing it its going to
be easier and easier for you. At the end you are going to connect speech naturally even without
thinking about it.

Whenever you listen to English materials, try to feel how speakers link words together.

The 9 basic pillars to speak English well

I want to tell you something personal

I have a friend from the US and we send each other emails on a regular basis.
Some time ago, we decided to exchange a voice recording. I first sent him my voice file and when he
answered me back, I was stunned!!!

He first apologized because he wasnt able to understand my English!!!

How was it possible that a native English couldnt understand my very basic English, spoken really
slowly?

Thats when I decided that I needed to answer the next question:

What make the difference between good and bad English speaking?

After some research I want to share with you what I think are the 9 basic pillars that make the
diference if you to speak English well.
Important Notes:

1. This post is the first one of a series. The blueprint you have to keep in mind if you want
to speak English well.
2. Next Im going to write 9 posts about how to master every one of these pillars.

Lets check the 9 ingredients that make English to sound English

1. Pronunciation
The most common mistake between English learners is trying to pronounce English words the way
you pronounce them in your own language. As you already know it doesnt work like that.
Moreover, English pronunciation is not easy at all because with the 26 letters of the English alphabet
you can produce more than 44 diferent sounds.

That means that:

You can forget about one letter = one sound.

You cant guess the pronunciation of a word by its spelling.

2. Syllable Stress
To speak English well you have to stress words correctly. Every word has one and only one syllable
stressed. Its just about stressing in the right place in every word.

If you stress words correctly you are more likely to be understood and to avoid misunderstandings.

3. Word Stress
In every sentence you have to know what words to stress and what words not to stress.

As a rule of thumb
1. You stress important words, the ones that convey the meaning of the sentence or the ones
you want to emphasize.
2. You dont stress or even de-stress words that are not important.

Doing these, the rhythm of your English is going to improve.

4. The Schwa Sound

The Schwa sound is one of the most common sounds of English and also one of the most unknown
between English learners.

English speakers use the Schwa sound instead of the regular sound of certain syllables and words
when theyre de-stressed.

5. Intonation
When you speak you always want to convey a very specific meaning

Are you asking?

Are you giving an order?
Do you have a doubt?
Do you disagree?

You always need to use the right intonation if you want people to understand what you want to
express.

6. Connected Speech
One important characteristic of English is that there is a lot of linking between words.
Connecting words correctly when speaking is going to improve your English rhythm and its also
going to reduce your accent.
7. Reduced Speech
When speaking in English you have to reduce or contract words whenever needed.
If you dont do that your English is not going to sound natural.

8. Thought Groups
In order to speak clearly, you always have to mentally cut long sentences into shorter chunks that are
called Thought groups.

This helps to stress the right words in long sentences and to pause naturally to breath.
Your English rhythm is going to sound more natural.

9. Word Endings
You have to be careful to never drop and pronounce word endings correctly.

Words endings are very important because they tell if a word is singular or plural or show what tense
you are using.
Its very common to be misunderstood when you are not careful pronouncing word endings.
