people were shocked to hear what gas it was, that crosses

traces of a nerve agent like sarin.
While continuing to fault predecessor Barack Obama for
much of the current situation in Syria, he acknowledged that
dealing with the crisis is now his own responsibility and
vowed to carry it very proudly.
Only days earlier multiple members of Trumps adminis-

on me big impact.
My attitude towards Syria and Assad has changed very
much, he said.
Since the attack Tuesday in rebel-held territory in north-
ern Syria, Trump has been under increasing pressure to
explain whether the attack would bring a U.S. response.
After all, Trumps first reaction was merely to blame
Obamas weakness in earlier years for enabling Assad.
Obama had put Assad on notice that using chemical
weapons would cross a red line necessitating a U.S.
response, but then failed to follow through, pulling back
from planned airstrikes after Congress wouldnt vote to
approve them. Trump and other critics have cited that as a
key moment the U.S. lost much global credibility.
I now have responsibility, Trump said. That responsi-
bility could be made a lot easier if it was handled years ago.

M-As Guenin is PALs top gun

By Nathan Mollat
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

All it took was simply one request to turn

Menlo-Athertons Katie Guenin into one of
the most prolific scorers in Peninsula
Athletic League history.
I only switched to playing forward my
eighth-grade year, said Guenin, who previ-
ously played center defender. I asked my
club coach if I could play forward during a
tournament and I scored a bunch of goals.
She hasnt stopped scoring. A dynamic,
four-year player for the Bears, she started
her high school career with 10 goals and
simply added on over the next three years.
This year, her senior year, Guenin had the
most productive seasons of her prep career.
She led her team and the PAL in goals
scored with 26. She was second on the team
in assists with 10. She helped lead M-A to
an undefeated, 14-0 PAL Bay Division
championship, the schools first since
1999, and its second straight 16-win season
(16-4-2). The Bears regular-season success
led to a spot in the Central Coast Section
Open Division for the first time. To cap off
her senior season, she assisted on all three
goals in the Bears monumental, first-round
3-0 upset of an undefeated Palo Alto team
that had yielded just one goal all season.
For her efforts, Guenin is the Daily
Journals Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
Shes a special player. I knew that from her
freshman year. She broke her collarbone her
sophomore year and was still the leading scor-
er. Shes tough, said M-A coach Jason Luce,

The subtle use of texture also can create a sense of scale
and distance. Placing coarse-textured plants closest to the
observer with medium plants in the middle and fine-textured
assortments in the rear makes the setting appear more dis-
tant. Reversing that, with coarse-textured plants in the
background and fine-textured varieties up front, tends to
make gardens look smaller.
Hardscaping using winding pathways and streams,
eye-catching fountains and furniture also produces a
sense of visual texture, along with four-season interest. The
same goes for foliage shape, bark surfaces and the patterns
made by branches.
Even kitchen gardens can be accented by emphasizing
visual texture. Dill, fennel, thyme, asparagus and lavender
are fine-textured plants that are attractive in edible settings.
