Calgary John Howard Society Responds to Community Concerns
Calgary, AB ‐ July 15, 2010 ‐ The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) announced today that it will present
additional guidelines to City Council on July 26, 2010 when its application to redesignate the land use of 4444
Builders Road S.E. is debated. These additional guidelines will address concerns raised by communities about
public safety.
“Since we filed our application to relocate Bedford House to the industrial neighbourhood of Manchester, we
have conducted significant public consultation with our potential new neighbours,” says Gordon Sand,
Executive Director of the Calgary John Howard Society. “Through our consultation activities we have learned
that some people have concerns about their personal safety around the proposed location of Bedford House.
We have listened to these concerns and would like to provide further assurances that will increase the
community’s sense of safety.”
To that end, the CJHS will propose the following:
1) The Society will introduce electronic monitoring for diagnosed pedophiles when Correctional
Services of Canada introduces the program in Calgary. Furthermore, CJHS commits to not accepting
any diagnosed pedophile at the new location of Bedford House until such a time as the electronic
monitoring program becomes available through the Federal Government
2) CJHS will limit the maximum number of residents proposed for the new location of Bedford House in
its first Development Permit to 32 residents
3) CJHS will request input from the Calgary Police Service to continue at the Development Permit stage
to ensure the Calgary Police Service remains an integral part of the development permit process.
“Bedford House has enjoyed an excellent safety record in its 27 years that it has existed in the
neighbourhood of Victoria Park and we are proud of our many successes and strongly believe that our
halfway house does not pose any danger to neighbouring communities,” says Sand. “We hope these
additional guidelines and commitments will help allay some of the communities concerns regarding public
safety.” Further to these additional guidelines, the Calgary John Howard Society remains committed to
continuing to work with its potential new neighbours through a Good Neighbour Agreement, should area
residents and businesses be interested in pursuing one.

The Calgary John Howard Society has applied to redesignate the land use of 4444 Builders Road S.E. to
accommodate the relocation of the CJHS Bedford House and its offices. The Society has been searching for a
new location for Bedford House for over five years, when they learned the current site was to be
expropriated by the City of Calgary for Stampede expansion. This land use application will be heard before
City Council on July 26, 2010.
