Dear Guidance Counselor:
‘The National Bar Association (NBA) is once again holding its annual essay and oral advocacy
competition for high schoo! juniors and seniors. The purpose of the Competition is to introduce high
school students of color to oral and written advocacy and to provide an opportunity to compete for
scholarships, Denny's Corporation serves 2s our Regional Corporate Sponsor. Students from throughout
Region IV (consisting of Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia) are
expected fo participate in this Competition.
“Tho Competition consists of two parts: an essay writing contest and an oral competition. Firs, students
must write an essey on a soleoted topic opining what Dr. King’s stance would be if he were alive today.
Essays for the competition are due April 30, 2017. The oral patt of the Regional Competition will be
held at Denny’s Corporation, 203 B Main Street, Spartanburg, ‘SC 29319 on Saturday May 27, 2017. The
vyeinner will receive minirmam of a $1000 scholarship. The Regional winner and his/her chaperone will
‘win an expenso paid trip to represent Region TV to compete for a $5000 sctiolarship duritig the NBA
Annual Convention in Toronto, Canada on August 3, 2017.

On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump won the 2017 Presidential election, In the
days after the election, a number of high school students across
the country protested the election by walking out of their
classes stating that they want their voices heard and they want
to show they are united.
‘What would Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. say about the students’ response to
the election?
