Subject: 5th grade Central Focus: Finding and

Operations and Algebraic Thinking completing patterns and graphing

coordinates on a graph.
Common Core Objective: Date Taught:
5.OA.3 Generate two numerical
patterns using two given rules. Identify March 21, 2017
apparent relationships between
corresponding terms. Form ordered
pairs consisting of corresponding terms
from the two patterns, and graph the
ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
Daily Lesson Objective:

Performance- Students will answer problems that involve generating or

finding numerical patterns with rules, forming ordered pairs, and graphing
the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.

Conditions- Students will independently on a note card will complete their

own function table when given a rule. They also will graph the ordered
pairs.

Criteria- Students are expected to earn 15 out of 17 points to show

proficiency
Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed:

Knowledge of coordinate plane, graphing points, ordered pairs, skip

counting, patterns

Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

1. Engage T: Today we will be learning about 10
graphing ordered pairs found in min.
function charts or through a story
problem.

The teacher will open a simulation exercise

and prompt the students to think about some
questions referring to the activity.

T: We are going to try and predict who is

going to win this race. Using ordered
pairs, we can predict where the runners
will be.

If both runners start at the same

position and have the same stride
(explain the step size to students),
then who do you think will win the
race?
What if I changed the stride length who
do you think would win?
What about if I changed the starting
position for the boy or girl? And they
had different strides?
What is being plotted on the graph?
Does it match what is happening in the simulation?
(teacher will go back through the simulation and show
them it does)

T: Weve seen how ordered pairs can be

graphed based on real life simulations.
People use graphs and ordered pairs all
the time to make educated guesses
about outcomes of situations. In our
situation, we were making educated
guesses on the runners simulation.
Keep in mind that you can use ordered
pairs and expressions to predict the
outcome of many things in life.

2. Explore T: We are going to start with a warm up 10-15

from yesterday. You learned a little min
about graphing coordinates and finding
the patterns. These problems should
help you remember all that you learned.

After the simulation, students will begin the

lesson by doing a warm up, reviewing what
they learned in the previous lesson. There
will be 5 problems on the board for them to
review with. The worksheet is listed below.
After completing the warm up the teacher
will go over the answers with the group. If
there are any questions or confusion in the
group, the problem will be solved on the
board for the whole class to see.

3. Explain Going around the room, students will answer 30

a variety of questions that will ask them to min.
complete the function chart, find the rule or
pattern, graph points, identify points on a
graph, or answer word problems involving all
mentioned above.
When students finish going around the room
they will compare with partners.

T: When you are finished turn and talk with

your partner and discuss your answers. If
you find that you have different answers,
discuss how each of you got the answer you
did and try and find out the correct solution
together and check each others work.
4. Elaborate/Ext For struggling students, they will be given a
end worksheet on the beginning strategies for
finding ordered pairs given a rule, then will
progress to finding the pattern in the pairs.

If students are excelling, then they will be

given a worksheet where they have word
problems that require them to figure out the
pattern, complete a chart, and graph the
coordinates. Students can also be given
more complex rules to solves from like
3x+6=y.
5. Evaluate Before exiting the class, students will be 8 min
given a rule on the board and will have to
create their own ordered pairs and function
chart as well as graph the coordinates. This
will be done on a notecard.
Given the rule: y=3x+3. Create a set of
at least 5 ordered pairs (list them out)
and complete the function chart. Upon
completing the function chart graph
your coordinates.

Formative Assessment:
Teacher will assess students through formal
questions and prompts throughout the class.
Teacher will also observe students work and
processes by circling the room during class
time.

Summative Assessment:
5 points for correct completion of function
chart- 1 point per pair
5 points for ordered pairs- 1 point per pair
10 points for graphing pairs correctly- 2
points per pair)
Students must earn 15 out of 20 to show
proficiency
