Plan for and develop all four language domains (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
through the use of meaningful task orientated content instruction
Use differentiated instruction to teach students at their level of language proficiency
value student culture, interests and background knowledge when planning instruction
Support and encourage students to use L1 language tools to help them develop their
understanding of current learning (use translators, allow L1 communication between
students, dual language dictionaries, and dual language assignments)
Use explicit instruction to teach content vocabulary to ensure comprehension and check in
with students often to ensure understanding
Scaffold instruction for meaning using student strengths, interests and prior knowledge
Involve students in the monitoring of their learning progress
Provide learners with multiple ways to practice and express their learning(oral discussions,
group work, reading response logs, anticipation guides, guided reading)
Teach and model to students effective ways to participate in academic discussions with their
peers
Dont over correct student errors instead provide a safe learning environment that models
