Standard 5

Impact on Student Learning

Element 5.1: Select or create appropriate assessments that will measure student achievement of goals and objectives.

Artifact: EdTPA Task 3: Assessment Commentary

Date: Spring of 2015

Reflection:

The artifact that I choose is my EdTPA task three commentary based on a Pickleball lesson for middle school
aged students. The artifact was used to reflect on my ability to creative learning objectives for psychomotor and
cognitive skills. Create appropriate assessments for the learning objectives that are measurable.
The artifact relates to standard five due to the fact it reflects on my abilities to assess students learning of the
cognitive and psychomotor objectives. In the lesson, I reflected on students learning the skills and rules of serving in
Pickleball. The psychomotor goal chosen was, 80% of students will be able to serve a pickle ball with efficient form in
the correct box 3 out of 5 times. The assessment task involved students serving the ball 10 times from left and right
box, trying to serve it in the proper box on opponents side. The cognitive goal for students was, at least 75% of
students will score at least an 8 out of 10 on the cognitive assessment. The cognitive task asked students 10 multiple
choice questions about serving in pickleball including form and rules. The data collected contains pre-assessment and
post assessment showing the students learning.
It is important as a teacher to assess students with the proper assessments based on the learning objectives.
As a physical education teacher assessing students helps for planning the future lessons. Based on proper assessment
the teacher can figure out what the students know and can do. Knowing this information can assist the teacher in
giving individual students feedback based on their results. Data will give teacher the group data which sets up the
central focus of the lesson and the individual data helps with modifying for individuals. The proper assessment and
correct amount of assessment can assist both the teacher and students in succeeding.
