Dying

Slowly

OWEN RISELEY
[COMPANY NAME]
[Company address]
Synopsis-
No matter how fast you run in always catches you, no matter where you hide it always finds
you, you stay in disbelief when old and young, but for everything that begins an end must
come. Using unlikely circumstances, I will establish this point. As we follow the dramatic
experiences from a Dad and a daughter and two astronauts. The sorry starts in space with
Neil and Ron who are working on the telescope, we then go down to earth where wee meet
Max and his daughter who has terminal cancer, when we go back to space things get chaotic
and Neil gets stranded because his jet pack gets broken and he tends up floating away.
Maxs daughter then dies, we then g back to space where Neil talks to his son and and give
him some advise for life then dies.

Format-
My production will be a single fictional drama as the story will be told in one episode. The
reason I have chosen this is because the story ends with nothing to be continued and a single
drama will help to emphasise the point of the production as it is a self contain story with a
beginning middle and an end. I feel it suits my target audience as they dont want to listen to
a radio drama everyday just when they feel like it.

Narrative-
The narrative structure of my piece will be of a fictional linear pattern as it does not include
any flash backs and will be executed in a chronological order. The reason have have chosen
this narrative structure is because the story is quite complex so I feel in order to make it
understandable I should keep the structure simplistic. It also helps to illustrate the story line as
it is about time progressing. It follows a realist narrative as the events depicted could happen
in real life.

Exposition-
The story starts in space in a satellite we know this dew to the rocket like noises and that talk
of zero gravity and being it space, this is just to introduce us to the two characters Ron and
Neil. After this we are taken back down to earth to meet the other characters and find out
their problem. We are in a hospital and Maxs daughter is unwell. We find this out because of
the hospital noises and the mention of nurses and doctors, we also find out his daughter has
cancer because the doctor tells us. After this shock we fly back into space to Ron and Neil this
is clear to the audience as we can hear Ron and Neil talk again about space. They then head
outside Ron on the outside satellite and Neil on the only working jet pack. This is apparent
because of the dialog beforehand as they explain what they are doing and what has
happened to the jet pack.

Conflict-
The problem is introduced when Neils jetpack it broken and he is stranded and slowly floating
away from the space ship we know this because of the sound effects and the conversation over
the radio. Ron is left to try and find a way to save him, he talks with ground control, this is
made clear by the conversation, to try and find a plan to save him. On the earth the conflict
that Max is having is to try a find a way to spend his last days with is daughter.

Resolution-
Neil talks to his boy and wife over the radio made clear by the sound effects and voices, he
talks to him about how he should live his life and what he should do until he dies from
suffocation. This is shown through the dialog and his breathing coming to an end.

v

Neil ORiley

Background-

Neil is a Northern Irish man growing up from the bottom in a working class family, with the IRA
destroying things around him. But Neil was extremely intelligent, becoming a gifted and
talented student and moved to the states by himself the further his education and try to fulfil
his dream of becoming an Astronaut. He stayed with is uncle while he was studying and dew to
his intelligence and love for science and space he got a job in NASA and he worked up from
there. He is now a family man with a son and is leaving the dream.

Traits-

Neil is a generally quite serious man but has an extremely dry sense of humour so it is hard to
tell when he is joking. Coming through a rough back ground he is extremely humble and down
to earth, meaning he is a great person for the younger generation to talk to. He is kind and
thoughtful and rarely loses control, staying calm in most situation making him good under
pressure.
Ron Williams

Background-

Ron was brought up in America in middle class family but raised to work hard and was not
spoilt. He had a privet education and attend the best schools for his dream to become an
astronaut. But this dream was slightly forced onto him as his Dad works at Nasa but could
never become an astronaut as he has severe asthma but Ron doesnt. Its not that Ron doesnt
want to be an astronaut but he just hasnt had a choice, he strives to please his dad but his
dad is tough on him.

Traits-

Hes a funny guy but sometimes can be accused of being childish. Hes still young and needs
someone to keep him on the rails.
Max Miller

Background-

Coming from a poor background, living it rough in East London. Hes a single father after his
wife died and it looking after his little daughter. He works full time as a builder although a bit
of a lad at times he has a good heart and doesnt wish to heart anyone. He has also just
overcome being an alcoholic.

Traits-

Hes a hardworking man always getting the job done, hes a leader and team man. A good
man whos been with the wrong crowd, struggling the make his life right.
Target audience-
Based on my feedback I could see that my target audience is quite broad but would be people a
higher age and perhaps more educated, for example social economic groups A, B and C1. The
individual would also be open minded and philosophical as the story line welcomes that.

Airing-
My radio drama will be airing on BBC Radio 4 at 17:00 as the
listeners match my target audience and it is a station familiar radio
drama so will be willing to consider airing my production. The timing
will also work well as people will be home from work and they can
listen to it as to wind down and relax.

Actors-
Neil will be played by Owen Riseley the reason for this is because he can do a northern Irish
accent and although he is a lot younger than Neil he as a relatively deep voice, he also has
studied drama.

Ron will also be played by Owen Riseley because he can do an American accent and fits well
with this younger character who looks up to Neil. Owen was used for this character as he came
up with Rons background and made the character so understands him and what he is going
though. This is the same for all the characters he plays.

Max again is played by Owen Riseley but with some pitch editing as to change the tone of his
voice because although he can to the east London accent the pitch would be too similar to the
doctors.

The Doctor Owen Riseley I chose him for this as it is a small role and as he is the other
characters he could do that one while he is there. And that is the main reason Owen is the most
of the characters for the ease of recording and organising the timing slot
The TV presenter and Neils wife are played by Rosina Blake I chose her as she can do an
American accent and has drama experience.
