During my teaching practice at GEMS Westminster School, I devote some time

to visit chemistry and physics laboratories for the primary and secondary

grades. I enjoyed discovering the differences and similarities between them. I

also did a discussion with the coordinator of science laboratories Ms. Marieca

about the importance to show students how to implement safety in the labs.

I realized that lab safety is a necessary element of every lab based in science

class. Consequently, lab safety rules and symbols are needed so that students

do not injure themselves or their classmates. According to our discussion, I do

understand that as a science teacher we have to make the student feel well-

prepared and well-equipped to do the experiment and to use the materials.

There are several instructions should be given to them which are washing

hands, knowing how a heat source works before using it, aware of how to

dispose of each type of waste properly and knowing the location of all safety

equipment. I do believe that the previous tips are important to mentioned

during lab classes because it contributes to provide security environment.

Another feature provided, and worth noticing is eyewash or safety shower

device (figure 2), which a device designed to wash chemicals off a person in
the event of a chemical spill. The area around the shower device is entirely

clear impediments to making way for the user to get the shower head without

facing any difficulties.

All in all, I obtain an excellent background of the labs safety manners and the

role of each safety material.
