BeArtAngel
This little gallery on Gornji trg in Ljubljanas old town is the
peaceful sanctuary of local artist Boidar A. Koleric, who
paints under the moniker of BeArtAngel. Koleri has spent
his life exploring creativity and life energy, ideals conveyed
in this latest endeavours. These world-renowned paintings
are said to represent unseen energies and can give a help-
ing hand in achieving inner peace. Such lofty artistic ideals
might be a little confusing, but Boidar himself is on hand
to happily explain the meaning behind the project. Hand-
made crystal water bottles are also available to purchase
here, with a wide selection of crystals and other accessories
on offer. Check the website for more information.QD4,

DobraVaga
One of the most unique arts venues in the city, DobraVaga
is a combination exhibition and project space, sales gal-
lery, pen artists studio and lively caf, whose programme
is focussed the younger generation of local artists. Its
name, which is derived from an old Slovene expression
meaning add a little more [to the scales], as well as its
slogan art by the pound and even its logo of a fish swim-
ming into a picture frame, all cheekily allude to both the
the overall concept behind the project and the space itself
(in the beautiful Plenik-designed arcade next to the fish
market). While the art on display isnt literally sold by its
weight, the artists work and creative process are valued
more than their name, and there is always a wide variety
of different works on display, with prices starting at less

Kmeki Hram
Short of getting invited to a local grandmothers house, the
family-run Kmeki Hram is simply one of the best places to
try traditional Slovenian cuisine during your stay in Ljubljana.
Not only is the home-cooked food authentic, delicious and
served in generous portions, but the restaurant is located
amongst fields and farmland in the neighbourhood-cum-
village of Tomaevo, giving diners the atmosphere of Slove-
nian countryside only 5km north of the city centre. Popular
with locals out for a family lunch, businessmen entertaining
guests from abroad and pretty much everyone in between,
for short-term visitors the premises also double as a guest-
house, with some 17 rooms available. QM-2, Tomaevska

Kuhinja Krui
Aside from the Euro, nothing has stirred up more dis-
agreement amongst Europeans in recent years than
horse meat - Slovenia being one of the countries where
people largely have no problem with horses finding their
way onto kitchen tables. Like-minded visitors in Ljubljana
will thus surely want to add the family-run Krui to their
itinerary. Operating a butchery for over a century, its one
of the countrys top suppliers of horse meat, which also
dominates the menu in various different forms at the
restaurant on the same premises. Various appetisers,
stews, cured meats and of course steaks from horse are
on offer here, all of which can be enjoyed in the charm-
ing little dining room or taken away.QL3, Bezenkova

Mediterraneo
This rustic themed restaurant in the centre of the old
town, opposite the cathedral, is a perfect place to take
a break from sightseeing and taste some authentic fla-
vours of Ljubljana. Much of Mediterraneos menu is
devoted to traditional Slovene cuisine, as well as rein-
terpreted local classics, like the signature dish - the Lju-
bljana cannonball, a decadent dish of crumbed chicken
stuffed with prosciutto, peanuts and kajmak (a rich fresh
cheese). As the restaurants name suggests, Mediterra-
nean influences also feature prominently, particularly in
the great selection of cold starters and seasonal lunch
specials. Mediterraneo also offer good coffee, light
breakfasts, fairly priced wines and friendly service.QD3,

Tloft
Yes Ljubljana there is more to international food than

Tloft has entered the local dining scene offering some-
thing completely different, namely, casual and modern
Asian. The select menu is perfect for a quick lunch or
light dinner (or not so light on all-you-can eat sushi

or some tasty dumplings and snacks - we are obsessed
with the Momofuku inspired pulled pork steamed

TRTA
Trta is the most frequently heard answer to the ques-
tion: Who makes the best pizza in Ljubljana? - and not
without good reason. Its wood-fired oven churns out
some truly delectable pies, which tend to be a bit more
substantial than most of the thin-crusted competition.
Our personal favourite is probably the Toskanska, with
rocket and pancetta among other toppings, but with
over 40 different pizzas crowding onto the menu you

town, Lars & Sven prides itself on sustainable, socially-con-

goods from the Janez Levec Institute for people with special
needs. This not only supports the local economy and mi-

guarantees the freshest and highest quality food. Speaking
of which, our meal of choice is the eponymous Sven burger,

VALENTIN
Taking its name from the famed Slovene priest, poet
and journalist, Valentin Vodnik, the restaurant is situated
opposite his statue just north of the central market, and
shares its premises with a fish mongers from which fas-
tidious diners can select their own fish. The main dining
area has been carefully restored, with attention given to
seemingly every detail - from the copper covered wiring
to the heavy wooden furniture to the low arched brick
ceiling. Aside from the expectedly wide variety of fish,
our favourite dish is the fresh succulent calamari (easily
amongst the best in town), while unbelievably cheap
lunch specials (3-7) can be ordered to take away all day.

Robba Fountain (Robbov Vodnjak)
One of the most famous landmarks in the city, this lovely
1751 fountain is named after its creator, the Italian Baroque
sculptor Francesco Robba (1698-1757), and is also known
as The Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers. It was the last of
Robbas Ljubljana creations. The eight years it took him to
complete it essentially bankrupted the man, and he finally
left the city for Zagreb. Based loosely on the grand foun-

when it first found its way into the anals of history as a
property of the Counts of Vinja Gora. Over the next 700
years ownership passed through a mlange of distin-
guished hands, including kings, noble families and even
the Catholic Church. The castle has seen many architec-
tural changes over the years, with minor alterations go-
ing on well into the 19th century. However, it can gener-
ally be said to have a Baroque style. After being largely
destroyed by the Partisans during the Second World War,
it has since been rebuilt and now serves as a five-star
luxury hotel owned and operated by the good people
