Learners!are!introduced!to!various!psychological!theories!and!are!shown!how!they!can!be!
adapted!and!applied!within!the!context!of!Child!and!Youth!Care!theory!and!practice.!The!LifeR
Space!Interview!is!presented!as!a!model!of!intervention!in!which!to!engage!the!various!
counselling!theories!and!techniques.!Learners!are!encouraged!to!critically!reflect!on!fundamental!
assumptions!embedded!in!certain!theories!and!taught!how!to!integrate!and!synthesize!this!
knowledge!into!their!counselling!perspectives.!!(45hrs)&!

This!course!is!designed!to!give!the!students!a!theoretical!framework!to!assess!different!groups!
they!will!encounter!in!the!practice!of!Child!and!Youth!Care!(CYC).!This!course!is!also!designed!to!
increase!the!students!knowledge!in!the!area!of!group!dynamics,!group!intervention,!group!
conflict,!and!group!leadership!as!they!apply!to!the!field!of!Child!and!Youth!Care.!Learners!will!be!
taught!to!guide!groups!through!the!various!stages!of!development!and!to!engage!them!in!
activities!designed!to!promote!healthy!group!interaction.&(45hrs)&

CAYW215&Ethics&and&Practice&in&Crisis&Intervention&&
(PreRrequisites!CAYW120,!CAYW1015)!

This!course!is!designed!to!introduce!learners!to!the!fundamentals!of!crisis!intervention,!ethical!
issues,!and!decision!making!strategies!pertinent!to!the!field!of!Child!and!Youth!Care.!Students!will!
learn!about!the!framework!required!to!promote!the!best!care,!welfare,!safety,!and!security!for!
clients,!themselves,!and!colleagues.!This!approach!of!nonRviolent!crisis!intervention!teaches!safe,!
nonRharmful!behaviour!management!techniques!designed!to!deescalate!crisis!situations.!!
Students!apply!general!ethical!principles!to!particular!situations!through!the!use!of!case!studies,!
practice!exercises!and!group!discussions.!(30hrs)&

seminar!encourages!selfRreflection!with!emphasis!on!communication,!professionalism,!personal!

This!course!is!designed!to!enable!the!student!to!understand!the!various!forms!of!creative!
therapies!(art,!drama,!music,!play!and!storytelling)!as!methods!and!techniques!for!emotional!
expression!and!behavioural!change.!The!course!will!provide!the!student!with!strategies,!ideas,!
and!some!practical!expertise!in!carrying!out!various!creative!activities.!Also!included!will!be!
discussions!on!the!creative!and!therapeutic!values!of!the!different!activities!and!how!they!can!
benefit!both!children!and!adolescents.!!(45hrs)&&

This!course!builds!on!prior!knowledge!regarding!the!study!of!the!family!as!a!system.!!The!course!
provides!an!overview!of!family!systems!theory,!family!dynamics!and!family!functioning.!!Various!
family!types,!life!styles!and!forms!of!parenting!are!also!explored!along!with!specific!resources!and!
interventions!used!in!a!Child!and!Youth!Care!approach!to!working!with!families.&(45hrs)&

COMM11&Clinical&Documentation&Skills&&
(PreRrequisite!COMM61)!

This!course!is!designed!to!help!students!understand!the!importance!of!documentation!in!the!
Child!and!Youth!Care!(CYC)!field.!!The!structure!and!procedures!relating!to!clinical!recording!will!
be!demonstrated!through!various!case!examples!and!templates.!!Students!will!practice/develop!
specific!documentation!skills!in!various!record!keeping!and!report!writing!formats!related!to!Child!
and!Youth!Care!such!as;!intake!assessments,!plan!of!care!reports,!progress!reports,!referrals,!logs,!
note!taking,!critical!incident!reports!and!discharge!summaries.!(30hrs)!
