Mr. Shaik Md. Rubayiat Tousif
Ms. Susmita Gosh

II- Nature (Core/Major/Elective): Core

III- Academic Term (Summer/Spring/Fall): Summer 2009-2010
IV- Credit: 3

V- Course Description:
Power network representations, per unit system of calculations, voltage characteristics of loads, power and reactive power
flow in simple systems, load flow studies of large systems using the Gauss-Seidal method, control of voltage, real power
and reactive power, symmetrical fault calculation, limitations of short circuit current using regulators. Symmetrical
components- positive, negative and zero sequence networks of generators, transformers and lines, sequence network of
systems, unsymmetrical fault calculations. Power system stability involving two machine systems, swing equation. Equal
area criterion of stability and its applications, solution of swing equation, factors affecting transient stability.
VII-Objectives:
At the end of this course, the students should be able to do per unit computations. They will know how to represent a system
for analyzing the voltages, currents, real power, reactive power etc. at different location of a system, how to improve the
performance of the system, how to find out different electrical quantities of a faulty system and the procedures to solve them
analytically. They will also know about the synchronism and stability of the generating plants.

IX-Course Requirements
The topics of this course are closely related to each other. So, it is required that all the students should be present in every
class otherwise they will definitely lose the harmony of the topics. The calculations of the numerical problems are mostly
phasor and complex. So, the students should use modern scientific calculator. It also requires a strong background on AC
circuits and Electrical machines. So, they should throughly revise the major topics of the two courses mentioned above.
