HEADING
Subject Area: Science

Concept/Topic: Adaptations

Grade Level: Grade 3

Date: 16.02.2017

DESIRED OUTCOMES
Big idea/Conceptual Statement:
Changes in the environment cause various types of organisms to adapt.

Standards:
3-LS4-3: The student is expected to construct an argument with
evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well,
some do not survive as well, and some cannot survive at all.
3-5-ETS1-1: The student is expected to define a simple design
problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for
success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Research what frogs need to survive from different resources.
Identify how do frogs survive
Design a habitat for a new frog at the Dubai Zoo.

Construct a habitat for a new frog at the Dubai Zoo.

Present their designed and constructed habitat.
Explain how their solution will solve the problem.

PLANNING OF LEARNING ENGAGEMENTS

Pre-requisites:
Students need to use different resources such as Ipads and books during
the lesson to research about frogs. The skills required for this lesson will be
research and team work skills. Also, technology will be used in all groups,
students should know how to use laptops.

Materials and Technology:

Smartboard
1 Pencil (per student)
1 Paper, piece (per student)
1 Student Journal: Build My Habitat! (per student)

1 laptop/IPad with Internet access (per class)

Assorted factual books about lizards (per class)

Various building materials:

Shoeboxes
Cardboard pieces
Wooden craft sticks
Glue
Construction paper
Plastic wrap
Rocks
Pictures of frog (per group)

Differentiation:
Conducting research can be difficult for some students. Students will be
provided a specific website that will be able to provide all of the

information. Some groups will be provided with a list of appropriate search

words. This will help students find the information and not become confused
with extra or unnecessary information they might find when looking at
many websites. The teacher will monitor groups and accordingly
differentiate depending on the students need during the investigation and
design phase.

5E Inquiry Cycle:
Engage: (5 minutes)
The teacher will begin the lesson by projecting a real life problem that
Dubai Zoo is facing. The students will be informed that a frog is being
transferred to their zoo. The zoo does not have an environment in which a
frog can survive. The zoo employees are not sure of what to include in the
frogs habitat. Help solve their problem, and construct the best habitat for
the new frog to survive. The teacher will ask questions on what
environment, adaptations and habitat means. Students will be reminded of
the big idea and that they have to become frog experts.
Hook: (35 minutes)

In groups of four, the students will explore and investigate through multiple
resources, what a frog habitat requires. They will spend 20 minutes
researching information and brainstorming. Students will research a frog
and identify its food source, water source, and shelter. They will also design
how their habitat will look.

Explain: (40 minutes)

Students will build a habitat using various materials that provides a way for
the frog to survive a potential attack from a predator, access its food and
water source, as well as provide shelter based on the research they
conducted. To extend their learning the teacher connected it to math
standards. The teacher will assign a price to each material that is available
for students to use to build their habitats. Students will have to also
calculate the cost of building.

Elaborate: (40 minutes)

After building the habitat, the students will write a short report on why
specific materials were chosen, and it should include factual evidence from
their research.

Evaluate (40 minutes)

Student will present their solution to the design challenge. Students need to
explain how their solution will solve the problem and increase the benefits
and decrease risks for this challenge. Students must have sufficient
evidence to back their design. Other groups will be invited to ask questions.
The teacher will discuss:
Why did you choose that material?
What did you use as shelter for your frog?
How did the frog get water?
Why didnt you put the frog in a cold area?
What would happen if you put the frog in a tank full of water (such as
an aquarium)?
Would the frog be able to adapt to be able to live underwater?

The teacher will use a rubric to assess the students final work and
presentation. Finally, the students will self-reflect on their project and
learnings.
