2. They began building a simple tower that kept falling as
they built it higher and higher.
3. As I tried to engage with the children, I created a small
bridge as the children watched an observed.
4. I invited the children to come help and expand my
bridge into what they felt could be attached.
5. The children began adding various types of blocks and
roads to my small bridge.
6. The children decided to add a zoo at the end of the road
by creating a square area filled with animals.
7. The children attached roads under the bridges and
towers they made to create a city.
8. The children built until they ran out of blocks.
9. Used the various tools to build, fix and construct
the rest of the city.
2 Teaching Strategies:
1. Challenges: Instead of helping the children build their
own cities, I challenged them to problem solve on their
own as they built tall towers on their own and asked for
assistance from the other children instead of me. This is
important for the children because they need to
understand the concept of cooperation and self-help
skills. It also helps the children take their own initiative
and build according to how they want it.
2. Questions: This is the basic instructional tool an
educator can use with the children. Asking open ended
questions to stimulate conversation with the children
and allow them to reflect on what they are creating is
important for their language and literacy.
- What are you building?
- Why did you make that?
- What tools are you using?
- Should we build here?

During this experience, the children were their own creators.

They took charge in where certain blocks went and how they
would create the whole scheme altogether. Although I did
instigate the activity, the children ended up creating more than I
thought they would. The children extended their own activity
by adding more buildings, roads, blocks and creating areas I

If I implement this activity again in the future, I would like to
implement more objects and items. Maybe making it a larger
scale build and having bigger blocks and adding cards and
creating signs so they can create a whole town.
