PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber:
Go over the agenda for the lesson-- write it on the board as well
Ask how everyone is doing today, if they understand the concepts so far, if
anyone has questions so far about the material we have covered.
Warn students again about graphic nature of the events we will be looking at,
and the need to be sensitive to the topic.

Assessment of Prior Knowledge:


Brief Kahoot covering these previous topics
Briefly recap Tuesdays lesson, going over the definitions of war crimes,
crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Expectations for Learning and Behaviour:


- Students will be expected to participate in all discussions and activities while being
respectful of others opinions/beliefs/values.
-Students will be expected to participate in the research activity using their cell phones
without abusing the privilege of technology.

Advance Organizer/Agenda:
1. Go over agenda and check in with students
2. Brief discussion of past concepts- war crimes, crimes against humanity,
genocide

4. Student response- How has ultranationalism caused crimes against humanity?

6. Snowball fight -how ultranationalism and racism and crimes against humanity
are connected
7. Armenian Genocide case study. Students will look up the 5Ws of this with
particular emphasis on the what and why

Differentiation:
-As of the moment no students require differentiation or accommodations at this time
Transition to Body:
Body (45 min.):
Learning Activity #1: Kahoot recap quiz.
Kahoot quiz on phones approximately 8-11 questions. Can work alone or with
a pair if they dont have a phone with them

Learning Activity #2: Student generated and answer to the question stated at the
beginning of the lesson.
Pass out student response papers, have them spend 3-4 minutes by
themselves answering the question, how has ultranationalism caused crimes against
humanity? 5-6 sentences long.
After they have come up with an answer, pair them up and have them go over
their responses individually. Put up a timer on the Smartboard with the instructions
that they have to speak about their response for approximately 45 seconds.
Have the groups speak and present on their definitions and answers to the
question. Have one student summarize the others answer.

Learning Activity #3: Student generated content of coming up with the connections
between nationalism, ultranationalism, and racism.
The students will work together in these same pairs and draw up an example
that connects nationalism, ultranationalism, and racism. They will write that example
on a piece of paper. Have students crumple up their paper into a snowball. When the
music starts students start throwing the balls around the room. When the music stops
students pick up a paper and uncrumple it. Call on random students to read their
example out loud- evaluate whether it is a true example. Start the music and repeat
various times until students become disengaged or we have covered all examples. If
needed, give students hints and examples that we have previously talked about
Examples of what they might include--loss of rights, property, businesses,
democratic processes, segregation, ghettos, scapegoated and blamed for events in
the past, culture or belief systems are destroyed, being put in jail for no reason,
torture or violent acts directed towards the group, government approval or lack of
action in prevention of these crimes and finally murder and or ethnic
cleansing/genocide
Learning Activity #4: Finding a relevant news article related to the Armenian Genocide.
Students will look at the 5Ws of the Armenian Genocide. This will be brief,
however, the most emphasis will be placed on what happened and why it occurred.
Also, want to ensure that they find the connection between ultranationalism and the
Armenian Genocide.
Students will be directed to the New York Times overview of the Armenian
Genocide and instructed to read the article together and highlight the pertinent
information. (This will only be done if there is a sufficient amount of time left in the
period)

Closure (2 min.):
Feedback From Students:
Students will be asked to look over their answer to the first question asked at
the beginning of the lesson and have to answer the following questions, did your
definition/answer change since the beginning of the lesson? Why or why not? Is
there anything different you would add? Explain why. At least 10 sentences and make
sure that students are meeting this requirement, remind them that some of the
answers received lately have not been following instruction in terms of length and
explanation.

Transition To Next Lesson: In the next lesson we are going to continue with Armenia
Genocide and look at the Homodoor Ukranianan Genocide with Stalin
