Students in a middle school level self-contained, cross-categorical classroom:

1.) Vocabulary
Recognizing vocabulary terms.
Augmentative communication devices, flash cards.
Teacher presented the class a flash card with a vocabulary word on it and
students found the picture of that word on their augmentative communication
device.

2.) Survival/Common Signs

Learning to recognize and know common survival signs.
Packets, pencils, projector.
As a class, the students filled out a packet in which they had to match the
correct words to the pictures of the survival signs. They also circled the
correct word for the pictures of the signs in multiple choice questions. The
teacher modeled how to fill out this packet on the projector.

3.) Math
Learning to recognize and know the numbers 1-10.
Projector, pieces of construction paper, colored pencils.
As a class, the students verbally counted from 1-10 and wrote the numbers
in order on their construction paper. For each number, they drew pictures
in correspondence. For example, the students drew four triangles for the
number 4 and they colored each picture.

4.) Writing
Improving writing skills by tracing/writing words and letters.
Pieces of lined paper, papers with dotted names and letters, pencils.
The advanced students repeatedly wrote their full name and addresses on a
piece of lined paper. The students that struggle with writing repeatedly
traced the dotted letters to form their names and the uppercase/lowercase
letters of the alphabet.

5.) Animals
Learning the names of animals at the zoo.
Packets with pictures of animals, pencils.
The students were given a packet that has pictures of the animals at the
zoo. For each picture, the students were required to draw a line to the
matching word.

6.) Word Matching

This was to help students know concepts of same and different.
Colored fruit toys, augmentative communication (AC) devices.
The special educator and the speech pathologist held two of the fruit toys
in their hands and they individually asked each student if they are the
same or different. Each student is entitled to respond by saying same or
different verbally or on their AC device.

7.) Math
The students learned how to count from 0-10 using number lines.
Five number lines, pencils, projector.
One of the number lines had all of the numbers on it and the whole class
counted from 0 to 10 together, as they moved their finger across the line.
All of the other number lines had one of the numbers blank so the students
how to fill out the missing number. The teacher modeled this lesson on the
projector.

8.) Reading
Read a short historical story and be able to answer questions for
comprehension.
Ten copies of short stories, pencils, and questions about the story.
The teacher read the story to the class, explained the instructions, and then
the class worked together to answer the multiple choice questions.

9.) Science
Teach students the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy.
Packets, scissors, glue sticks, projector.
The teacher provided the students with examples for kinetic energy and
potential energy. The students were given two charts labeled Kinetic
Energy and Potential Energy. They cut out pictures and glued them
underneath the correct energy category. The teacher modeled the lesson to
the class on the projector.

10.) Language Arts

Recognizing words that begin and end with the letter m
Packets, scissors, glue sticks, projector.
The teacher provided the students with examples for words that begin
with the letter m and end with the letter m to show the difference.
The students were given two charts labeled Begin with m and End
with m. They cut out words and glued them underneath the correct chart.
The teacher modeled the lesson to the class on the projector.

11.) Opposites
This was to help students to understand the meaning of the word
opposite.
Packets, pencils, projector.
The teacher called on each student to go up to the board and point to the
word that is the opposite of the picture displayed. They had to circle the
correct words on their packet that was handed in at the end of class.

12.) Life Skills

Teach students how to have proper manners.
Video on how to have manners, and a slide show with animations and
written descriptions.
The teacher individually called on the students and provided them a
scenario in which they had to demonstrate the correct response to prove
that they understand how to have manners.
