1st Article:
The author is arguing that colleges try to create a welcoming environment black students
in this university, however the opposite in achieved. The author seems negative about this topic.
This piece is intended for college students and professors to highlight the issue of how the
minorities feel in this colleges. She only uses evidence that supports the claim. One evidence
she states is that the college gives a False Equivalence of the needs of white kids to the
black kids. Her overall diction was negative using keywords like segregation, attempt, racist,
etc.
2nd article
This article was about the gender gap of women in Harvard Business School. It was
explained that women are not being treated equal because they had the same grades and test
scores as males. The author makes his claim and explains to the audience what is being done
to correct this problem. The methods are having a scribe in the classroom and having tools in
the class to track class participation. The author intended audience is college students,
professors, and alumini, and business marketers who want to hire college graduates. One
inquiry I have is that is the gender gap more prominent in business school than other majors?
3rd article
This article is about how the differences in income for a well-known university compared
to community colleges receive. The author explains that people view community college as
negative, thus they do not have as much help from the state than a four year college. This
brings the issue that as the author stated that most people cannot join the middle class unless
with a degree. The authors purpose is to inform his audience there is a large discrepancy
between the two different type of university. The genre of this piece was an opinionated news
article.
4th article
This article was about how a case study was conducted to see how students performed
differently in a traditional classroom lecture versus a flipped classroom lecture. The evidence
that the author uses supports that the flipped classroom helped the students perform much
better was that the test overall improved on their final exam. The purpose of this piece was to
communicate to college professors a new method to teach students that can benefit their class.
My question for this article is how much of the students actually preferred the alternative
teaching strategy?
5th article:
The authors purpose of this article is to inform college professors and some degree to
college students that this generation of college students are reading and writing more than ever.
The author explain how a college professor, Mr.Goldsmith is teaching a class where students
are on their phones and being distracted to encourage student to see what they learn from
doing so. The context of this article is primarily the linguistic mode. The evidence that the author
used is that most teenageers are reading and writng at a faster rate because of social media
which demands these two modes of communication. My inquiry would be that did former
students who took this class enjoy what they learned?
