FromMichaelIconsideredhiscomments,Astheroleoftheteacheritisessentialthatyouunderstandtheindividualneeds
ofthestudentandarefamiliarwiththestudentandtheirinformationandThe[SpecialEducation]teachershouldalsobe
awareoftheneedsofthestudentandthecorrectplacementforthestudentWhataretheoptions?Whatplacementsexist?
Whatisbestforthestudent?andIdecidedtopostabouttheparticularScenariopresented,andtheWISCIVsamplethat
wasincluded.
Scenario
ImagineyouareattendinganinitialIPRCmeetingscheduledasaresultofthefindingsofaclinicalassessment.Theparent
haspreviouslymetwiththeclinicianandtheschoolstafftoreviewtheassessmentresults(seethesampleWISCIVreport
fromPsychoeducationalSolutionsofTampaBay).ThedecisionwasmadetoproceedwithanIPRCmeetingtoformally
identifythestudent.
MyResponse:
BeforethemeetingIwouldreviewmyanecdotalnotes,Jane'slearningprofile,hereducationalassessmentsandOSRto
formulatemyinitialideasforwhatherplacementshouldbe,andwhy.Iwouldcollectevidence(samplesofJane'swork)to
presentatthemeetingtosupportmyrecommendationstothecommittee.
TheWISCtestingoccurredinJaneshome,attherequestofhermom,andsheisexpectedtoattendGrade2

FromthisIexpectsheisnotinGradeOne,andnotinGrade2,soitmustbethesummerbreakandsheis7.1yearsold.
Sincethetestingtookplaceathome,(notatschool)herparentsprobablyinitiatedandpaidfortheassessment.Sinceyou
mustbe7inthecalendaryearinwhichtheschoolyearstartstobeenteringGrade2,Janeisyoungerthanmostoftheother
studentsinherclass,butnotbymuch.Sheisnotbehindinanyofthecategoriestestedandisfaraheadsome.SinceIamin
theteacherrole,ImustbeherGradeOneteacher,theteachermostfamiliarwithherschoolworkandhersocialrelationships
intheclass,andacrossgradeswithintheschool.
TheIPRCmeetingisproceedinginordertoformallyidentifyJane.IwillassumeitwillbeidentifyingJaneasanexceptional
studentwithanintellectualexceptionality,giftedness,withplacementinaregularclassroomwithresourceassistance.(page

Thequestioniswhichregularclassroom?ShouldshebeplacedintheGrade2classsheisscheduledtoenter,orshould
Grade3beconsideredforthisstudent?WillGrade3placeJanewithpeersfunctioningatasimilarlevel?Willthisbeenough
supportforJane,orshouldshealsohaveaccesstoaSpecialEducationResourceTeacherforenrichedsessionsandprojects?
Myguessisthatsheshould.Skippingagraderarelymeetsalltheneedsofgiftedchildren.
ReviewingtheeducationalassessmentresultsoftheWISCIV,Inoticedthatithadrawscoresandscaledscoresand
percentileranking(Janeisinorabovethe84thpercentileinallcategoriesexcept"coding"wheresheisexactlyaveragethe
50thpercentile),butitdidnotincludeanageequivalencyforeachcategoryoftestingasthecurrentversion,WISCV,
does.WithWISC5itiseasytoseeatwhatgradelevelsheisacademicallyoperatingat,inordertoconsiderplacement.

WillshebeabletoformnewfriendshipsintheGrade3class?DoesshealreadyhavetiestotheGrade3classsuchasan
oldersibling,oroldersibling'sfriends?ShewillbethenewkidinagroupthathasbeenworkingtogethersinceJunior

recommendenrichedreadingforJanesothatifshefinishestasksearlyshehassomethingtodoinordertokeepherengaged
atschool?
Duringthemeeting,Sheejaisexactlyright.IwouldsharemyideaswiththeteamandtakenotesaboutwhatIlearnfrom
others.Icanrefertothesenotesinthefuture,attheannualIPRCreviewmeetingsthatwillfollow.(MaybeIamnotJanes
Grade1teacher,buttheteacherwhoseclassshewillbeentering,inwhichcaseIwillprobablybepresentatthenextreview
meetingandwillbeusingtheinformationgatheredatthismeetingtotaylorinstructiontoJaneinthecomingyear.)
IfIfeltsheshouldstillgointoGrade2forsocialreasons,Iwouldbereadytorecommendtotheparentthatshehaveextra
curricularactivitiesthroughhome,likemusiclessons,danceorgymnastics,tokeepherstimulated.(Sincetheparent
initiatedtesting,thismaybefinanciallywithinreachofthefamily.)Frenchimmersion,orlearninganotherlanguage,might
alsobeconsidered.
Afterthemeeting,IwouldhavemynotesreadytocontributetodevelopingtheIEPthatmustbeformedwithin30daysof
themeeting(page1,Module2:ProceduresGoverningSpecialEducationinOntarioIEPProcess:TransitionPlanning.)Asher
classroomteacherIwouldexpectthatIwouldcontributetotheStrengthsandNeedssectionoftheIEPinparticular.I
wouldalsocontinuetorecordanecdotalnotesandmakeobservationstoseeiftheplacementthatisdecidedupon,isworking
forJane,andwhatadjustmentsImightrecommendtoupdatetheIEPandtheplacement.
