SBE Report on Individual Differences

Prepared By: Russel Junior Julius

On 13th to 17th of March 2017, an observation has been made on the pupils of Sekolah
Rendah Kebangsaan St. Theresa Tambunan. This observation focuses mainly on individual
differences. St. Theresa primary school is located in Tambunan town and it is a missionary
school. Most of the students is from Tambunan inland and only a few of them is from an
economically stable family. The students in this school is divided into two class per year, the
Arif class is for the more capable students and the Bijak class is for the less capable
students. Students are observed during their examination week.

Based on the observation done on the two different classes types, it is concluded that the
students from the Bijak class is generally naughtier and louder compared to those from the
Arif class, the teacher who were in charge of the class have to apply various punishment
techniques to gain control of the students. One of the punishment methods used is negative
punishment where the teacher tells the students that he or she will take away their recess
time if the students refuse to follow the teachers instructions.

Other differences noticed is the difference is cognitive level among the children, during the
exam while answering an English paper, some students who have higher cognitive level
manage to complete the test in time, while some others need more than the time provided,
which is an hour and fifteen minutes, to complete it. The teacher in the end will then give the
mentioned students positive reinforcement to motivate them to work faster and think harder.
In some cases, the teacher even reads the question for the students to be able to answer it.

during the observation, I also have the chance to observe a year one student during their
Pendidikan Seni Visual exam paper. Is has been noted that some of the students have a
higher cognitive level compared to the others. As an example, one students manage to finish
the test in less than 20 minutes and some others need more than the time provided, which is
one hour, to finish the same task.
