Reflection

I found this project very interesting in the sense of planning for

my future, the career I want to go into, and the education I need to get

there. I started with basic research, looking up universities with

kinesiology and physical therapy courses and contacting the

professors, which picked up some momentum until I was looking into

local internships and associations I could potentially work for. I didnt

find much surprise in researching this profession; I already knew that

getting a doctorate degree was difficult along with a lot of school, but

hearing this from someone who has actually gone through all this

schooling and achieved their doctorate degree raised a bit more

awareness on how hard I need to be prepared to work. I was also

surprised the flexibility of one of my contacts schedule and I learned

what kind of hours I can expect if I were to work at a physical therapy

clinic. My contact, Danielle Shotwell, was able to go from working five

days a week to only three because she had a baby. This interested

me, because I have only known the hours my dad has worked as an

optometrist with his own practice, so compared to that the hours and

flexibility at clinics and larger practices makes me a bit more relieved. I

was able to interview Danielle Shotwell, a new practicing physical

therapist at Three Lakes Physical Therapy and Lisa Kim, a veteran

physical therapist with 25 years of practice currently at North Santa

Rosa Physical Therapy, Apple Valley and Petaluma Post Acute Rehab.

They both provided me on useful information on how much school and

work I should be prepared to but into becoming a physical therapist,

what kind of majors and degrees I should be looking into, and what

social and physical skills I should possess as a physical therapist. I

also learned the different kinds of specialized physical therapy, such as

vestibular therapy/ rehabilitation and that physical therapist dont just

treat patients for their injuries, but can also research, create, and

develop programs for clinics, like a vestibular rehab program as part of

a physical therapy clinic. After interviewing both these practicing

physical therapists both, very involved and interested in their careers, I

am feeling more and more confident in pursuing physical therapy or

perhaps going into a similar field, like sports medicine to become an

osteopathic or allopathic physician. With the insight of both these

therapists, I believe I have a better sense of what a career in physical

therapy is would be like for me and how trying, yet rewarding this

profession might be.
