I-Search Project Reflection

Everyday I constantly think of where Ill be years from now, where Ill live, what

college I went to, and what jobs Ive held. When given this assignment, figuring out a

career pathway had been a challenging task because of the wide ranges of professions and

hobbies Im interested in, so choosing one put myself in a close state of thought. The

careers I was observant in provided a stable lifestyle but didnt allow myself to express

what I truly found happiness and satisfaction in: photography.

When given this assignment and opportunity to tour a profession of my choice, I

choose a photojournalist. I have always found a connection with the camera and the

artistic factor of angles and editing; however, I knew it took more than just taking a

picture, editing and angles to be considered a good or true photographer.

Photography has continually allowed me express myself artistically and creatively given

my atrocious drawing and painting skills. While I enjoy photography, my mother and I

always cruise through the latest National Geographic magazine, admiring the

mesmerizing images it holds, and constantly wondering, how do they take this pictures?

or I wonder whos the person who takes these photographs, I thought it would be

perfect to be that person for this project. Choosing the profession of a photojournalist

revealed to me that stories and news can be told and communicated without words, which
paralleled to myself in the sense that photography as a hobby allows me to express

myself without words. What I didnt know is how much training and experience one had

to go through to become a master of their profession, and the skills one needs.

I follow many photographers on Instagram, frequently scrolling through their

accounts admiring their work. Instantly, I wanted to contact one of them. I contacted

Dawn Cooper, a photographer who locally lives here in Petaluma. Fortunately, none of

the photojournalists I contacted responded in time; however, Mrs. Cooper reached out to

me and offered a sit down interview at her home. She provided me with practical,

detailed and rich information, ranging from education, the importance of communication

skills between clients and figuratively through pictures, the significance of lighting,

editing techniques, differences between cameras, and the use of film. Through her advice

and aspect of her job, she portrayed to me what it takes to become a successful

photographer/photojournalist and how to be considered a professional. Her passion and

love she demonstrated for the profession in her answers elucidated the beauty and

specialness of being able to tell others stories, news and the importance of connecting

with others through your artistic work. There is no shortcut in becoming a

photojournalist, it takes risks, an open mind, determination and extreme skill at

interpreting and communicating an event through a photograph.

Ultimately, Im pleased with my results after completing this assignment. While

deciding between which career to choose, this project allowed me to think about my

future in complete reality and questioned myself the possibilities I could do in the future.

Not only did I excel in my research skills, the information I gathered about
photojournalism successfully opened the lense of my eyes to the qualities and pathway in

pursuing it as a career and every step in between.
