Colours in the Rainbow,

Digital Story-telling

Student Booklet By
Dimiti-Lee Bella
Introduction to the World of Colours

In this booklet you will learn about the world of colours. Colour is everywhere, and we see and use
colour everyday in our lives. Colours influence the way we see, think, feel and act. For example, if
we see the colour/shade of black, we see darkness and may feel sad or upset, but if we see the
colour yellow, we see light and sunshine, which makes us feel and act happy.

You will be looking at how colours can influence people and portray different meanings in artwork
and everyday life. You will also learn how to mix and make different shades of colours to create
different tones. For example, if you were to mix the colours blue and red, what colour would you
get? Dont know? You will find out what throughout this booklet.

When you finish this booklet, you should be able to:

1. Understand and know how to make different shades and tones of colours.
2. Know what a primary colour is.
3. Know what a secondary colour is and how to make it.
4. Know what a tertiary colour is and how to make it.
5. How to use the different colours, tones and shades in your own artwork to portray different
meaning and purpose.
6. You will also be able to/have created your very own digital story to show your classmates.
Lets take a look at the colour wheel. It is made up of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours to
show you what each of these terms mean and look like. Did you know that there was a name for
mixing colours and that they were called by these terms?
Lets see what youve learnt so far.
What are the primary colours?..................................................................................................................
What are the secondary colours?.............................................................................................................
What are some examples of tertiary colours?..........................................................................................

Activity 1.1 Lets try mixing our own colours! What

colours have you created? Did you create secondary
or tertiary colours?
What primary colours did you use to achieve this?

In order to create lighter colours you need to mix your

colours with a lighter shade. For example, if you
wanted to achieve mixing a light pink, you could add
either yellow or even a shade of white to your primary
colour red to achieve this.

In order to create darker colours you would therefore

need to mix your colours with a darker shade. For
example, if you wanted to create a darker shade of
green, you could add blue.

Now its your turn Practice mixing some colours. Add lighter and darker shades to these colours
and observe the difference it makes. What happened?

Create your own art
After looking at other artists techniques, and re-creating this art, it is now your turn to create your
own type of artwork using your choice of resources. This could include paint, oil pastels, chalk,
pencils, watercolors etc.

You will need

Paper to plan your artwork

Your choice of resource (paint, oil

pastel, chalk, watercolors,
pencils).

Colour mixing tray (if using paint)

Water, paint brushes (paint, water

colours)
Creating your Digital Story
What is a Digital Story?
A digital story is a movie clip made up
of a sequence of pictures in order to
achieve telling a story. The pictures
are taken to allow the object to move,
therefore telling a story.

The example you were just shown was

made up of approximately 20-25
photos in a sequence. A suggested
program for this could be iMovie (This
is the program used for this example).

Planning your Digital Story

Begin planning your story ideas on the story plan template provided.
1. Think about what characters you will use
2. What will your story be about?

For example, you can create characters using play-dough or plasticine

Creating your Story
Once you have completed your planning sheet, you may begin creating your digital story and
making your characters. Once you have done this, you are to begin taking photos using the digital
cameras provided in a sequence for your digital story. You may want to partner up with a peer to
assist you in moving your characters whilst you take photos.

Once you have completed this, you are ready to begin transferring your pictures onto the
computer and begin creating your digital photo story using a moviemaker program.

Take your time figuring out how to use the program and take your time editing your movie and
adding music and text create your story.

Checklist
Have you taken your pictures?
Have you completed your planning sheet?
Does it make sense?
Do you have music or text?
Is the timing right?
Have you saved your digital story?
Have you watched over your digital story to make sure it works and makes sense?
Youre about to cross the finish line.
Once you have created your digital photo story and completed the checklist provided, you are
ready to share your creation with your classmates (partners if preferred).
Well done!
