This paper consists of two sections: Section A and Section B. Candidates should
answer all questions in Section A, and 2 out of 3 questions in Section B. If
more than 2 questions are attempted in Section B please indicate which questions
should be marked; otherwise, your first 2 attempts will be marked.

Unless otherwise stated, justification for your answers must be given.

Section A
Attempt all questions from this section.

Note: For the duration of this exam, recall the disc of radius r > 0 centred at
z0 C is given by Dr (z0 ) := {z C | |z z0 | < r}, and that D := D1 (0).

A1. (i) Give an example of a closed subset of C that is not compact. 3

(ii) Precisely state Goursats Theorem. 3

(iii) Find and classify the singularities of

sin z
f (z) = . 4
(z 1)(z 2)

A2. (i) Suppose that f and g are holomorphic functions on D2 (2) such that
1 1
f (1 + n2
) = g(1 + n2
)

for all n N. Prove that f (1 + i) = g(1 + i). 3

(ii) For a D, the Mobius transformation a : D D is given by

za
a (z) = .
1 az
Give formulae for a (0), 0a (0) and 0a (a) (you do not need to prove these). 3

(iii) Find a holomorphic bijection f : D D such that f (0) = i

3/2. Write your answer in the form f (z) = ca (z) where |c| = 1 and a is a
Mobius transformation. 4

Section B
Attempt two of the three questions from this section.

B1. (i) Suppose C and, for each n N, there is a continuous function fn :

C. Prove that if (fn )
n=1 converges uniformly to a function f : C, then f is
continuous. 4

(ii) Show that the series

X
3n (z i)n
n=1
converges uniformly on any compact set K D 1 (i). 4

(iii) Let be an open subset of C. Define what it means for a family of continuous
functions F to be normal on . 3

(iv) Show that the family of functions fn (z) = z n + 4z 3 + 1 is normal in D. 4

B2. (i) State and prove the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. 8

(ii) Show that all the roots of the polynomial p(z) = z 4 + z 3 + 3 lie in the annulus
1 < |z| < 2. 7

B3. (i) Find the number of roots of p(z) = z 7 + z 5 + 1 along the coordinate axes and
in each quadrant of the complex plane. 7

(ii) Find a holomorphic bijection from the set D1 (0) D1 (2) to the interior of the
complement of the infinite strip {z C | 1 < Re z < 2}. 8
