INDIRECT INSTRUCTION (STRUCTURED DISCOVERY) LESSON PLAN FORMAT

The Skeletal System

Elementary Science
_____________________________________________________________________________

Big Idea: The Skeletal System

Grade Level: Grade 3

Rationale: This is lesson is part of the Common Core State Standards. Students need to understand the body
systems and how they are essential for life. Student should understand the importance of the skeletal system for
protection, movement, and support.

NC Essential Standard(s):
3.L.1 Understand human body systems and how they are essential for life: protection, movement and support.

Next Generation Science Standard(s):

LS1.A: Structure and Function
Plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior,
and reproduction.

Instructional Objective: Students will develop an understanding of what the skeletal system is and how it
works through investigative centers throughout the classroom. The students will be evaluated through formative
assessments within each center. There will be two worksheets the students will fill out as they investigate the
skeletal system. They will also be assessed on their ability to solve the Breakout Box. Students will be
expected to finish their work in each center and I will check for understanding throughout the learning process.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills: Students will have a basic understanding on what the skeletal system is
from prior experiences. Some may know why the skeletal system is important or how it works from previous
grades. The teacher should have an understanding of the how this body system works and why it is important.

Materials/Resources: There will be four centers in the classroom. Center 1 will use a chromebook and will
play the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i42FSNA9bAY. Center 2 will use the SMARTboard and will
play a skeletal game on abcya.com. Center 3 will look at a book on the human body and will fill out a
worksheet based on the pages about the skeletal system. Center 4 will use a Breakout Box that students will
work together to solve.

Source of your lesson: I got ideas for the breakout box from resources on http://www.breakoutedu.com/. I also
looked up SMARTboard games and Youtube videos on the skeletal system to use during the other centers. The
book used for Center 3 was found in the class library by a student.

Estimated Time: an hour and 15 minutes

Accommodation for Special Needs/different learning styles: There are three EC students in Block One and
two EC students and two ESL students in Block Two. I will give clear directions during the beginning of the
lesson and I will repeat the directions each time students rotate to a new center. EC students will follow through
the lesson with the rest of the class with the support of their classmates. I will walk around the classroom and
check for understanding as EC and ESL students rotate to each new center. The students will also be given extra
attention as they work through the breakout box and I will make sure they are being included in the learning
process.

Safety considerations: The instructor will be walking around the classroom during the entire lesson and will
make sure students cooperate with each other as they go through each center, giving extra attention to the group
using the breakout box.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 Es. Your procedure should be detailed enough for a
colleague to follow. Additionally, I expect you to include possible questions and anticipated student responses to
your questions for each section.

Engage: I will review the skeletal system with the students by asking does anyone know what a skeleton is?,
What is the skeletal system?, and Why is the skeletal system important? I expect students to answer with
A skeleton is bones, The skeletal system is all the bones in your body, and The skeletal system protects
your organs. or The skeletal system helps you move. I will engage students by saying I need everyone to
think like a scientist. Today you are all going to investigate the skeletal system. One of these centers has a pretty
sweet surprise so its very important for all of you to listen to my directions and pay attention to all the clues in
the room. Some teams will succeed in finding the surprise, some may not. Thats why its important for all of
you to work together in your teams! I will explain each center before breaking students into their teams.
Center One is a video about how bones work. I want you to fill out the worksheet that says Bones Video
Questions at the top of the sheet. This worksheet could be used as a clue so make sure to work together to get
all the information you can! Center Two will be a skeleton game on the SMARTboard. Center Three will be
using a book to find more information about bones and will fill out the other worksheet. Center Four is the
breakout box. You all need to work as a team to solve all the clues at this center! I will make sure students
dont have questions about each center as I explain the directions. Then I will state There are directions at each
center you will need to read before beginning each activity. You will only have 10 minutes to work in each
center so stay focused! Look at the top right corner of your worksheet. Whatever number is there is what team
youre on. Team One will be at Center One, Team Two will be at Center Two, Team Three will be at Center
Three, and Team Four will be at Center Four. Work together and good luck!

Explore: Students might have some prior knowledge on the skeletal system from previous experiences and
grades. They will all have different levels of knowledge on this topic and will be investigating how the body
system works and why its important. They will be split into four groups and will rotate between four centers in
the room. Center One will be a video about the skeletal system. Students will watch the video in their groups
and will work together to answer the questions on their worksheet. The video could help them in solving the
clues in Center Four so students will be engaged in answering these questions. The video I used for this activity
is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i42FSNA9bAY. If technology fails, students will discuss the questions as
a group to try and find the answer. If the internet still works, students can look up the questions online. If not,
students can use classroom resources such as dictionaries, books, and the teacher to find the answers. I will
have backup books ready. Center Two is an interactive game on the SMARTboard where students will move
bones to the correct locations in the body. The game responds with an error sound if the students put the bone in
the wrong place. If they get it correct, the game will name the bone aloud. The game can be found at
http://www.abcya.com/skeletal_system.htm. If technology fails, I will use the skeleton in the classroom.
Students will be given a list of bones in the human body and will have to write down the bones on post it notes
and place the post its on the skeleton. Center Three will be reading two pages in the class Body Systems book
on the skeletal system and will answer questions as a group. Center Four is the Breakout Box center. Students
will work together to find and solve the clues that will get them the key to the box that holds their surprise The
clues are all based on the skeletal system. The reward for opening the box will be given to the students who
successfully solved all the clues, finished their work in all centers or were actively engaged, and have opened
the box. The reward will be given to these students at the end of class.
Explanation: After each group has finished every center, we will meet as a whole class. I will ask students
questions about what they learned from the video, book, game, and breakout box. We will go through the
answers from their worksheets and I will write them on the board for students to see. Questions I plan on asking
are What is the skeletal system? Why is it important? How many bones are in the human body? What
type of bones keep you upright? What type of bones hep you move? Whats the largest bone in the body?
Whats the smallest? What does it mean when you fracture a bone? What is a joint? Why do we need
joints?. I will explain any answers students are confused on and go into more detail with each question. The
students will also be given the opportunity to discuss each center and what they liked/disliked about them.

Elaborate: I will ask students to write down three things they learned from the lesson and three things they
would like to learn more about. I will tell students Next week you will be learning about all the body systems.
Today we learned about the skeletal system which is formed by all the bones in your body.

Evaluate: I will be using a formative assessment to evaluate student learning by walking around and observing
each team in their centers. I will write down notes about each group as they rotate centers about their learning
process and if they stay on task. Students will be expected to finish or be actively engaged in all work at each
center. Students who stay engaged and are able to solve the Breakout box will be rewarded with the surprise
at the end of the lesson.

Closure: I will ask students what they learned from the centers, what their favorite center was and why, and
questions about the skeletal system. I will explain that they will continue learning about other systems in the
body next week. The students will give me an exit ticket on their way out with three things they learned and
three things they would like to learn more about.
