Learning Objective
Discuss and relate the main characters life to their own life in
an effort to better understand social issues discussed in the
novel.
1. What is the difference between literal, figurative, and
technical language? How can a reader distinguish between
literal, figurative, and technical language in a text? 2. When are
multiple word meanings utilized in a text? How do these
multiple meanings help clarify a text? 3. What is varied word
choice? Why is it necessary for an author to vary their word
choice?

Writing Activity In a Google Doc:
Describe a time when you were ostracized. What
happened? Why were you isolated? What was your
reaction? How did it make you feel?

Describe a time when you ostracized someone else.
What did he or she do to make you isolate them? Were
your actions justified? Why? What was his or her
reaction? How did it make you feel to isolate him or
her?
Active Participation 5 Whys. Class discussion.
Closure Have students re-visit their 5 whys, and their opinions
regarding Melindas choices.
Assessment Quiz at the end of each book section.
Final project when novel is complete.
