SECTION =I: Verbal Communication Direction: The following passage is followed by five questions (Q.1 to Q.5) or unfinished statements about the passage. Each of these followed by four options. Choose the one that you think fits best. Rudyard Kipling's immortal story of Rikki-tikki-tavi, the mongoose that saves the lives of some British children in India by attacking and killing a group of cobras infesting the family's garden, has given rise to many popular misconceptions concerning mongooses and their ability to kill snakes. The tale is, however, based on accurate observations of the animal's behaviour and habits. The mongoose feeds on insects, rodents, snakes, and other creatures that may be dangerous to man as well as harmful to his economic activities. Like the cat, the mongoose can be extremely useful to society as a pest-destroyer, a fact that has long been recognized and even used to advantage by man. The ancient Romans, for instance, felt that if it were not for the Egyptian ichneumon's (mongoose's) destruction of crocodile eggs and the resultant check on the Nile's crocodile population, that river would have been virtually un-navigable. Indeed, the association between mongoose and crocodile in ancient Egypt was so strong that it carried over into religion, for when the mongoose was deified at Heracleopolis, its cult was apparently in antagonism to the worship of the crocodile in neighbouring Fayyum. The enmity between the mongoose and the snake is also well documented in the classical accounts of Egypt, but it is in India that the mongoose has earned its popular reputation as the deadly enemy of the serpent, especially the cobra. Rudyard Kipling's romantic anthropomorphism notwithstanding, it was common practice among the British in India to keep mongooses as pets specifically for the purpose of ridding their houses and compounds of poisonous snakes, scorpions, and other dangerous vermin. So highly regarded, in fact, were the pest-destroying abilities of the mongoose that during the late nineteenth century the Indian mongoose was introduced into Fiji, the Caribbean, and the Hawaiian Islands in an effort to reduce the damage caused to sugar cane crops by rodents. Yet, the very qualities that make the mongoose useful to man can also make it a pest itself. The animal can wreak as much havoc against poultry as the traditional European chicken-stealer, the fox. The mongoose has been known to cause considerable damage to crops, and in some cases has drastically altered the ecological balance of areas into which it has been introduced. It has, for instance, been blamed for the disappearance of certain species of ground-nesting birds from some of the islands in both Fiji and Hawaii. The breeding or keeping of mongooses in captivity, except for scientific purposes, is forbidden by state law in Hawaii, and the animal is viewed as such a potential threat to both agriculture and native ecosystems that its importation into the continental United States is totally prohibited. 1, “Many popular misconceptions”, arising from Rudyard Kipling’s story conceming mongooses are based on their ability to kill snakes their being deified and worshipped in Egypt their propensity to attack crocodile and bird eggs their portrayal as friends and saviour of humans sop> LA 2. The import, breeding or keeping of mongoose has been forbidden in Hawaii because A. they are a threat to the local ecosystem +B. they have lost their pest destroying capability C. they have begun attacking humans in Hawaii D. they harm human economic activities in Hawai 3. Among the following statements, which statement, if true, would strengthen the argument in the last paragraph? 4, Which of these can b Mongooses, like dogs, can be trained to guard and protect human interests The Indian mongoose is more dangerous than its Egyptian counterpart. ‘The ground-nesting birds of Fiji and Hawaii disappeared due to human hunters Mongoose was present in Fiji and Hawaii before the colonizers set foot on the island. inferred as definitely false from the above passage? A. Ichneumons were native to the Nile river bed. B. Ichneumons were deified as Heracleopolis. ic In Fayyum, the ichneumon was pretty unpopular. D. __Ichneumons were domesticated by the Romans, 5. Which of the following can be inferred as the writer’s perspective on mongoose? A, Snakes, Insects, Rodents and other dangerous creatures, being natural enemies of the mongoose, the presence of mongoose in the ecosystem, beneficial to man. B. The presence of mongoose in the ecosystem is detrimental to man’s economic activities, since along with being a natural enemy of other pests, the mongoose can be a pest itself by attacking poultry and damaging crops. C. Man’s appreciation for the pest-ridding capabilities of mongoose predates Rudyard Kipling’s romantic anthropomorphism of the creature and not necessarily follows from it When man, driven by the wish to protect his economic interests, transplants mongoose into an ecosystem, that is not a natural habitat of the creature, it becomes a threat to that entire ecosystem. Each of these followed by four options. Choose the one that you think fits best. With the help of descriptive, analytical and mostly mathematical methods, positivist economists are certain that they reach value-ftee, universal and objective truths. Lionel Robbins, a philosopher of economics who has had a strong influence in the field and particularly on the discussion of the disciplines’ boundaries, puts it thus: Economics, as a positive science, has no status as ethical or political prescription [...] Political economy in my vocabulary is not scientific economics, a collection of value-free generalisations about the way in which economic systems work. (Robbins cited in Hyman, 1994: 62) The roots of this conception of the possibility of an objective and universal science lie in the westem thinking of the 17th and 18th centuries. In analogy to the natural sciences and following their deistic world view, people believed that it would be possible to find natural laws in economics with the help of rational, logical thinking as well. The main thrust for this trust in the human intellect—the ‘ratio'—was the influential 17th century French philosopher ff . Rene Descartes. He divides the world dualistically into res cogitans and res extensa. The thinking substance, res cogitans, he linked to such characteristics as reason, mind, spirit, objectivity, universality and logic. Res extensa, the extended, mechanistic world, was connected with subjectivity, emotions and intuition, After, and one might even argue through, the cognitive connection of res cogitans with masculinity and res extensa with femininity, the latter one was devalued as inferior to the former. The ‘demarcation line'—as it is expressed by the economist McCloskey in a book called The Rhetorics of Economics—ties between scientific and humanistic, fact and value, truth and opinion, positive and normative, precise and vague, cognition and feeling, hard and soft and, of course, between male and female. Feminist economists suggest that this dualistic, hierarchical and value-laden way of thinking, has become a fundamental principle in economics. In the Cartesian view, the ideal of science since the enlightenment—driving the development of modern sciences, especially classical and neoclassical economics—is the accumulation of ‘objective’ and ‘value-free’ ‘facts’ that can be known by autonomous individuals. Julie Nelson argues that this view ignores the methodological and theoretical possibilities of the res exfensa because of their negative connotation. Reductionism, categorization and de-contextualization are constituents of the rational view that led to (methodological) individualism, atomism and positivism in economics. The consequence of this development is the overlooking of the fact that science’s methods and contents, which claimed to be objective, were gender-biased. 11. Positivist economists rely on A. universality of logie B. masculinity of res cogitans C. human intellect D. _normativity of intuition 12, The objective of the passage is to rethink the philosophical foundations of economics define economies as a positive science critique the devaluing of subjective opinion : critique the de-contextualizing methodology of positivism pop 13. Choose the one that you think fits best. The failure of the vast majority of candidates in the Central Teacher Eligibility Test is convincing proof that the system of teacher education is in urgent need of repair. In this case, trainees with a B. Ed degree could not pass the examination designed to test their fitness for appointment as teachers in Central government schools, and some Central Board of Secondary Education institutions. The overall system of teacher training in the country has been found wanting for decades and many recommendations have been made by expert panels for improvements. A good critique of what ails the various B. Ed programmes, as well as diplomas in education is to be found in the National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education. Demand for greater numbers of teachers has led to massive quantitative expansion of the number of institutions and courses at various levels in recent years, but without the necessary emphasis on infrastructure, faculty qualification and leaming resources. A key point the Framework makes is that state provisioning of elementary education is marked by an attitude of resignation towards the existing system of pre-service and in-service training, which leaves little inspiration for the practitioners to improve. ‘The gamut of issues surrounding teacher education needs a fresh look. The imperative to raise the entry-level qualification for training of teachers from Plus Two, and make it a well-rounded degree programme has been underscored by the NCFTE. It would be worthwhile to invest in a four-year degree programme after senior secondary, or a two-year programme after acquiring a Bachelor's degree. The J.S. Verma Commission appointed by the Supreme Court has also highlighted the importance of making teacher education a part of the higher education system to introduce the necessary rigour and exposure to various integral disciplines. It is the poor preparation in both the disciplinary and pedagogical domains that produces trainees who are found wanting. Making it compulsory to have a dedicated schoo! attached to a pre-service teacher education institution, as the Verma panel suggests, could be one way to ensure that graduates acquire the necessary competence and skills. Such a system would naturally be far superior to distance learning courses. The poor performance of teacher-trainees in recruitment examinations is a clear indicator of the failed assembly-line system of training that exists today. It is also important to note that 90 per cent of the pre-service teacher education courses are in the non-government sector and the state needs to play a more active role in improving institutional capacity especially in the East and Northeast. S 26. Teacher education in India has come under close scrutiny because A. teacher training institutions lack infrastructure B. the supply of qualified teachers is much less than the demand C. most of the B. Which of these is not one of the suggestions for improving teacher education given in the passage? A. There should be an entrance test for teacher training to test the teaching aptitude of the aspiring teacher trainee. B. Raise the entry level qualification for teacher training from plus two to degree. C. _ Integrate teacher education into the system of higher education. D. _ Every teacher education institution should have a dedicated school attached to it. 30. Based on the passage, which of these is an incorrect inference? A. Teaching requires practical training. B. Qualitative improvement is as important as quantitative expansion in the education sector. C. Students of uninspiring teachers grow up to become uninspired teachers. D. The recommendations of bodies like NCFTE and the J.S. Verma commission are constructive, only if they are deliberated upon and implemented by the state.
