Conference
Committee:
Topic: Climate Change & Clean
Energy Solutions
Introduction by Dais
Hi Delegates! My name is Kabir Malhotra and Ill be chairing this
committee. This is my second year of being in MUN, and my fourth time
chairing a formal conference. Im excited to be chairing a debate on Climate
Change, as it is a topic that I find very interesting. If you have any questions
or concerns feel free to email me at kmalhotra 2019@hightechhigh.org.

Vocabulary

Carbon Footprint
the total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and
indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon
dioxide (CO2)
GHG Greenhouse Gases
a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing
infrared radiation, e.g., carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons
Acclimatize
to adjust to changes in the environment
Topography
having to do with the elevation or lay of land (ei. surface
features)
Global Climate Change
a change in the long-term weather patterns that is the characteristic
of regions of the world
Climate
long term average of the weather, over the years

Background Information of the Topic

Climate change is a term used to refer to significant changes in the
Earths climate over an extended period of time. This includes changes in
temperature, precipitation, and wind patterns. Over the past century, Earths
average temperature has risen by 1.5F and is projected to rise by another
0.5F- 8.6F in the next hundred years. This aspect of climate change is
referred to as global warming, and is caused mostly by greenhouse gases
(carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases) getting
trapped in the atmosphere. These gases are emitted by the burning of fossil
fuels and solid waste, as well as a variety of agricultural and industrial
activities. When theyre in the atmosphere, they absorb the energy that the
Earth typically emits back out into space and redirects it to the surface or
other molecules in the atmosphere. This heating of the Earth via greenhouse
gases is known as the greenhouse effect.
Climate change affects every country on Earth. One country's actions
affect all countries around the world. Each country has a unique plan to
reduce their emissions and crack down on climate change. However, the best
way to prevent the effects of climate change without negatively affecting
other parts of society like the job market, culture, and trading is still under
debate.
Many countries are working to reduce emissions and many solutions
have been presented, usually in the form of an agreement by several
countries to reduce their emissions by a certain amount by a defined date.
These include such agreements as the Kyoto Protocols and the Paris
Agreement.

Bloc Positions
Most countries agree that climate change is a pressing issues that
need remedying. Although they feel this way, an obstacle that they face is
money. Every solution that is presented costs extreme amounts of money,
and countries may not have enough. Another obstacle is the citizens of
countries

Questions to Consider & Resolution Ideas

Questions to Consider:
Whats causing climate change?
How is this problem relevant to present day?
How are the daily lives of people affected by this issue?
How are we affecting future generations of the human race?
What actions can be taken currently to stave off a no-turning-back point, if it
hasnt already happened?
What are some alternate solutions to climate change?
How is your countrys position affecting climate change? Is it affecting it
positively or negatively?
Resolution Ideas:

Procedure
Standard debate
Crisis heavy
