First Grade Newsletter


March/April 2017

Important Information
Spring Break- We hope everyone has a restful break. Its hard to
believe that this is the last nine weeks of 1st grade. We will continue
to learn and prepare for 2nd grade.
Report Cards- The report cards will be sent home on Tuesday March
28th. Please sign and return the envelope. Important Dates
Supplies Needed- We are in need of paper towels and copy paper.
If you could send these items with your child, it would be greatly March 28th- Report cards

Anti-Bullying Week- This week, we will discuss kindness and treating
each other with respect. We will have an anti-bullying assembly, Mix
April 5th- PTO Meeting 4-
It Up Lunch Day and sit with others during lunch and acts of kindness
5pm
day.
April 13th- Field Trip
School Colors Day- On March 31st, send your child to school in our
school colors, purple and turquoise, in support of anti-bullying. April 14th- Spring Holiday
Common Formative Assessments- Our first graders have been taking No School
these assessments. Formative assessments are monthly learning
checks that provide guidance to both the teacher and the student April 24th- Quarter
on two areas: where the student has achieved mastery and where Assemblies
the student needs additional support to learn. They are created to
assess the standards that have been taught in the classroom. Our April 28th- Earth Day
classes have been very successful. For the 3rd quarter in Language Carnival 4-7pm
Arts, the first grade average was 79% mastery. In Math, the first
grade average was 85% mastery. After reading the class scores, we
are able to modify and adjust the instruction to maximize student
learning.
Fieldtrip to the Botanical Gardens Butterfly Magic- On April 13th, we
will be going on a fieldtrip to the Botanical Gardens. We will be
learning about butterflies and their lifecycles. It will be a culminating
activity for our unit. Permission slips will be sent home on April 3rd.
Earth Day Carnival- On April 28th we will be having a school carnival
from 4-7pm. We will need volunteers to work at our booth. Please let
us know if you are willing to work for 30 minutes during the carnival.

The students are learning
Language Arts- Students will continue to ask and answer questions about key details in read aloud
text. They will demonstrate and confirm understanding of the read aloud text through a written
experience. They will use details and key ideas to answer questions. They will listen and respond to
stories to build comprehension.

Writing- The students will write informative/ explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply
some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

Math- The students will continue to discuss 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. They will also
learn to tell time and learn about fractions.

Science- The students will continue to learn about lifecycles.
