PROCEDURE
Introduction (__min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: Today we will learn about body image and how both the media, our peers and
performance enhancing drugs affect our body image. I have got some great activities for today that I think you
will have fun with. Introduce myself
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: what is body image? What around us affects our body image?
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: there are no wrong answers in our discussions today. This is a place
where you may answer our class discussion questions freely and without judgement. There will be no laughing
at answers in or outside of this classroom. We have all dealt with different issues in our lives and we have no
idea what people have gone through or where they have come from so we need to respect that. Because this can
be a sensitive issue for some people there will be no name calling to each other.
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
Transition to Body:
Body (__min.):
Learning Activity #1: group tracing of body
students get into groups of 5-6 and they take paper and markers and scissors. They then trace one of their
group members bodys and then write kind things about each other, or qualities they like in
people/themselves in the body they drew. Then look at the Barbie slide: In 2011 a study about Barbie was
done and found that: If Barbie were an actual woman, she would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist,
33" hips and a size 3 shoe, and she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions. Barbie would weigh
110 pounds and have a BMI of 16.24 (which would categorize her as severely underweight.
this shows that the way Barbie was created is unrealistic to real-life people. How does this affect the
children that have Barbies as toys?
since Barbie is to look so different, now cut your trace of your body into the shape of what a barbie would
be. Make the waist and arms smaller, make the legs thinner, and the bust bigger.what does this mean
