Mixtures and Solutions

Students will be able to explain the concept of matter.

Students will work alongside partner to observe and discuss the
making of mixtures and solutions.
Students will brainstorm ways to separate mixtures and solutions.
Exit ticket- Students will identify an example of and mixture or solution
and support their answer.

Teacher Actions/Student Actions:


Teacher:
1. Directs students to get out white boards
2. Helper passes out scratch paper
3. Write on your boards what you think a MIXTURE is
4. Show board to person sitting next to you
5. Draw a line and write the word SOLUTION
6. Under the word, tell me what a solution is
7. Set your boards to the side (do not erase) and cap your markers
8. Explain materials (here I have three cups of water and another
substance that isnt water)
9. Starting with the first- water and sand
10. Teacher shows sand and water and asks students to make
a prediction if the combination will be a mixture or a solution
11. Teacher puts sand in water and stirs
12. Ask students to observe and write observations
13. Teacher calls on students share what they wrote
14. Teacher does the same, now with salt and water
15. Do you think the mixture will be a mixture or solution?
16. Teacher pours salt in water and stirs
17. Teacher gives wait time for observations
18. Calls on students to share
