the medium can be manipulated.

INTRO TO PRINTMAKING 2

Introduction:
I will start by showing them a presentation showing some prints
and linocuts. I will also show a linocut that I have made myself
and share a little bit of the process.
At the beginning of each following class, I will check in with
students to see where they are at with their work. They should
have well-developed ideas and some drawings already started.
Body:
Day 1-2
I will then introduce the assignment. They need to make a series
of 4 artist trading cards that reflect on who they are as an
individual or a practicing artist.
- What stylistic choices do you need to make considering the
limitations of the medium?
- How does this affect your thinking?
They will spend the next two classes developing 4 designs to be
later carved into linoleum for printmaking. They should have at
least 2 drawings well underway by the end of the first class.
Day 3-5
Once the students have their drawings completed, I will do a
demo showing them how to transfer their designs to their lino
and how to use the carving tools. I will have a design started to
show an end goal, and how the process looks. They will then
spend the next few days carving out their artist trading cards,
then eventually move onto making a series of prints where they
will experiment with colour variation and arrangement.
Closure:
I will make sure to walk around the class for the whole period and
help students if they need it. At the end, I will check in with them
and see how their progress is going, and inform them that we will
be continuing working on their drawings in the next class.
As time progresses and the students move into carving, I will
keep reminding them of the thought process on which areas they
want to show up in the prints and what they dont. This should
help guide their thinking for their design choices.

Sponge:
They can start transferring their drawings onto pre-cut lino.
Once lino has all been carved and printed, they are to continue
drawing in the books they made the previous week.
