Supporting or Deflating the Negative Reputation of Chemistry

INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the Study

In every university or school, Chemistry is one of the major courses that is and will
always be offered. Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.
Chemistry is all around us. Everywhere we go we observe and experience chemistry. From
the moment we wake up in the morning up to sleeping at night and even while we sleep
theres always chemistry involved. It greatly impacts our daily lives. Studying and using
chemistry improved and continues to improve our lives. That is why chemistry is being
taught even as early as in high school.
Every student has his/her own struggles concerning with different subjects and courses.
But a noticeable thing is that almost every student greatly struggles with chemistry. From
basic to complex chemistry, each student has his/her own scuffles tackling a chemistry
course.
II. Objectives of the Study
This study aims to, with the use of tools, methods, techniques, and principles of Statistics,
examine, and determine whether university students generally have a great time struggling
with a specific chemistry course which is the Chemistry 11, General Chemistry, and if this
particular course is generally difficult. Specific objectives of the study includes the following:
(1) to construct a frequency distribution table of the grades of Chemistry 11 students, (2) to
construct a graphical presentation of the data from the frequency distribution table, (3) to
compute for the Measures of Central Tendency, Measures of Dispersion, and Measures of
Skewness of the said data set, and (4) to obtain a valid, non-biased result and conclusion from
testing statistical hypotheses.
III. Significance of the Study
Students usually thinks that taking up a chemistry course will always be difficult, that a
chemistry course will always be a hard one to deal with.
The findings of this study will redound to the benefit of the students who in the future are
thinking of taking Chemistry 11. This study shall provide data and results to support or
deflate this negative reputation of the course.
This study shall be of help to students by giving a brief background about the course.
This study shall deliver valid and non-biased data and results for the benefit of the current
and upcoming students.
This study will also help the researchers in applying Statistical concepts, tools, methods,
techniques, and principles learned in the Statistic class and will harness the researchers
ability to in data gathering, experimenting and interpretation.
IV. Scope and Limitation
This study aims to investigate the grades of Chemistry 11 students only but is not
concerned with the other Chemistry courses offered. The study includes in its scope the grades of
students from different sections with each section varying in time schedule and population.
