Dissertation: “Reporting, Assessment, and Accountability: A Genre Study of Writing Center
Reports”
An empirical, mixed methods study that used rhetorical genre studies to examine writing center
assessment reports, collected via a survey distributed to writing center directors. Findings showed that
reports primarily acted to provide accountability to audiences, suggesting a contradiction in the term,
“assessment report,” and thus, indicating that reports themselves do not perform assessment (the
improvement of teaching and learning). This dissertation complicates the assumptions made about
assessment in scholarship and encourages writing center scholars to revisit how assessment has been
discussed, including articulating more firmly the differences and intersections among accountability,
assessment, reporting, and even research.
