Archaeology of Bangla ee (Telugu University, Hyderabad; Ph.D. awarded, 1997) This thesis describes the methodology of archacology along with a brief discussion on the systems and codes used in schools. The nature of di/triglossia of Bangla has also been discussed. The focus is on the standardization of Kolkata — a variety of Bangla, The nature of amalgamations of different archaeological isotopes by analysing one text-book of school grammar, bhaSa prokaS BaNgala bEkOron (1939) by Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay (Chatterji). The incorporation of different grammatical categories in a single text-book is described by showing their genesis. The problem of translation, either from English or Sanskrit, which reshaped Bangla according to supposed ‘pure’ and ‘perfect’ language, is also discussed. In fact, the notion of ‘nation state’ along with a centralized economy is a gift from the British Raj. And such gift also stimulated the centralization of linguistic varieties. Non-discursive formation of such political fact also played a role in grammatical discourse. ‘This wedding between discourse of knowledge and non-discourse of power is also highlighted The official ideology of literacy needs schooling — described as a coercive institution following Althussar, Foucault, Illich, Bemstein, Friere and Chomsky. The stereotypical imposition of knowledge ‘cripples’ the creativity in general and linguistic creativity in particular. It is argued here that violent institutionalized coercion not only cripples Externalized Language, but also Internalized Language. This argumentation breaks the Chomskyan concentration on *Plato’s problem’. Rather it focuses on ‘Orwell’s problem’, which, in turn, opens up a new avenue for bridging Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics in connection with the corelation between ‘empty linguistic organism’ and ‘human maleability’. Though there is still a lack of empirical evidences to prove crippling of Language Acquisition Device, which is treated as ‘physical organ’ by Chomsky. To combat this situation, an alternative is proposed, which propagates Deschooling and Decentralization following the footsteps of Illich and others. The notion of ‘Anti-grammar’ grammer) which is supposed to be within the biology of human beings, is proposed. The term ‘Anti-grammar’ is coined here to distinguish the prescriptive grammar with the grammar within the human biology. This grammar suggests that it is better to learn the grammar of rationality rather than prescribe rules in the form of disciplinary technology.
