Who is P. Ramlee? P. Ramlee is a multi-talented star, famous singer, composer,

musician, screenwriter, editor, producer, songwriter, publisher and film director in Malaysian

art industry. Even though he died more than four decades ago, his works are still occupies a

significant place in Malaysian life. His films have screened in television stations, his songs

are still played on local radio stations and P. Ramlee is used as a subject in various articles

and local newspapers. On top of that, with the technological advances of today, viewers can

access his works, films and music produced by him repeatedly through online internet and

television stations. Most of his films are the comedy genre, musicals, drama and historical.

The creative art works of P. Ramlee give so much impact to the group of Malaysians today

because his films show a relevant issue which arise in the present. This universal artist often

labelled as Asian Charlie Chaplin by the artist. Although some Malaysians criticize his films,

but most of the peoples glorifies his creative works. Most of Malaysians do not know P.

Ramlee personally in real life but Malaysians know him through his films, music, and all of

his creative art work that produced by him. His works are known as evergreen and universal

artwork as is P. Ramlee produced an honest artwork to his community of Malays. For

example, P. Ramlee portray the public nature of good and bad Malays in his film but

delivered in a way to educate the community. He has the ability to be versatile and it makes

him have a high ability to be the best among the best. If noticed, the films produced by P.

Ramlee are closely linked to the culture of the Malays and that is why the evergreen

consolidated with young people and older generations. This essay will discuss the films that

in the film are parallel to the current issues in Malaysia. The issues that exist in P. Ramlees

films are the wedding dowry money and the respect issue. For example, the scene from

Bujang Lapok film directed by P. Ramlee which questioned the dowry money which is very

costly and wasteful if it spends a lot of money just for wedding ceremony and finally end up

with a lot of non-performing loans. This issue is closely linked to the issue that easy to be

viral on social media in line with the technology which is dominated by young people.

Moreover, the nature of the lack of respect to society are also among the issues raised in his

film. For example, the scene in Seniman Bujang Lapok film when 3 bujang lapok wanted to

ask the sigh guard to ask permission to meet the manager, but the language used by the

characters brought by Sudin was disrespect and offensive. The issues that trying to convey

was presented with comedy approach which all races and ages of people are easy to accept

the films Therefore, the issue that appear in his film is in great demand by audiences of all

ages.

Secondly, P. Ramlees films influence young people to produce art works. Among the

works of young artists is the popular P. Ramlee The Musical theater was staged in Istana

Budaya, Kuala Lumpur directed by Adlin Aman Ramli and Zahim Albakri. The theatre has a

series from year 2007 to 2014. The response has been great success obtained with the sold out

tickets and the audience came mostly from young ages of people. Musicals theatre that are

staged has the comedy elements make the audience interested and enjoyed the theatre. Not

only musical theatre has been produced but P. Ramlee also inspire young mural painter to

produce their own artwork. Mural painting that is located in Penang and seksyen 7, Shah

Alam is one of the evidences of the mural painting. Here we can see the influence of P.

Ramlee is still popular in this era and easily accepted by the public. Although P. Ramlees

films has long been produced, but the genius and the talent of P. Ramlee is recognized by the

Malaysian.

Furthermore, P. Ramlees films refresh the old life memories back, especially to the

old generation nowadays who have lived throughout the time of P. Ramlees era. Nowadays,

the older generation place the P. Ramlees films at a high level so that his films are not

forgotten by the younger generation. By looking at his films, the older generation can recall

the past memories, especially from film called Sergant Hassan (1958) produced by the Malay

Film Productions Ltd, which tells the story of Japanese occupation in Malaya. So, the older

generation will remember the days of misery experienced by them. Sentimental value that

contained in P. Ramlees film to some extent their longing to their life which has been

experienced. Thus, P. Ramlees film will be remembered forever by the old generation today.

In conclusion, P. Ramlees film are still popular among young and old generation. P.

Ramlee has now been developed into national icon. He is regarded as an idol and his star

persona continues to be relevant to a changing Malaysian society. The issues that has been

portray in his films is clearly attract the young generation to watch and took as a lesson. P.

Ramlee also inspires so many people especially Malays to work as an artist. Besides, the

older generation can watch P. Ramlees film as many as they want beacause of the

sentimental value that have in his film. Hence, P. Ramlees film should be kept as a national

treasure because it so important to the next generation.
