Three phase shunt capacitor are typically either H connected or Y/star connected. The main protection is unbalanced protection which will be
provided via current transformer, this CT will be connected at tie point between quadrature midpoints.

Let suppose we have 2 parallel units in 1 string

= (( + 1) +( ))
( + 1)( 1) +

Let suppose fault occurs in Q1, and capacitors string is composed of units as below similar to previous case = 0.9729 , series groups are
2, and parallel groups numbers are 3. We are supposing that fault occurs in quadrant 1 of H bridge.

(0.9729 + 3 1)(2 1) + 3 2

In other quadrature, situation of capacitor units , groups and others are same but without any fuse blown.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4

(17.75736 + 1.5) (1.5 + 1.5)

17.75736 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5

Per unit voltage across the affected phase is,

G is the integer number represents the appearance of grounding system, G=1 for ungrounded and G=0 for grounded Capacitor. (0) is the
phase capacitance with no blown fuse.

At no fuse blown condition in Quadrant 1 the 1 was also 1.5 p.u.

(1.5 + 1.5) (1.5 + 1.5)

(0) =
1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5

(0) = 1.5. .

3
= 1 + 1 (( ))
7.22151
2+ 1
1.5

= 1.515966

Before fault inception, we can calculate voltage with G=0,

3
(0) = 1 + 0 (( ))
7.22151
2+ 1
1.5

(0) = 1 . .

Initial phase current at no element failure,

= (0) (0)

7
= 1 1.5

= 1.5 .

Affected phase current due to fuse failure is,

= ( )
(0)

17.75736
= 1.515966 ( )
1.5

= . . .

Unbalanced current in H Bridge is,

=
( + ) ( + )

(17.75736 1.5) (1.5 1.5)

=
(17.75736 + 1.5) (1.5 + 1.5)

= . . .

Now in normal condition there will be no unbalance current, you can see it by putting 1 = 2 = 3 = 4 = 1.5 . . ,

=
( + ) ( + )

= . .
