Instructional Activities
Topic: Economics
Objective: Acquire banking skills
Materials: paper and pencils
Implemented: Students will be given practice checkbooks and a base amount. They will
then be given the task of balancing the amount of the checkbook when told to add and
deduct certain values.

Topic: Mathematics
Objective: Discuss how to solve word problems involving time and money.
Materials: Overhead projector, transparencies, pens
Implemented: Students will be given worksheets with problems that are identical to those
presented on the projector. The teacher will dissect each word problem into sections and
highlight important information. Students will fill in blank spaces with information from
the scenario.

Topic: Science
Objective: Students will understand that Mars and earth have similar geological features.
Materials: Current research materials on Mars, photos of the surface of both Mars and
earth, computer with Internet access.
Implemented: Students will be told that they are going to compare Earth and Mars to find
similarities between the planets. They will begin by doing research to find information
and collect pictures of geological features of both planets. Students will post side-by-side
pictures of the planets and compare the physical traits and geological features. Students
should type a short description of the comparisons.

Topic: Technology
Objective: Students will understand the vast history of technology.
Materials: Research materials on the history of technology, computer with Internet
access, and strips of paper.
Implemented: Students will be taught the definition of technology and will brainstorm
various forms of technology that they are familiar with. They will be taught the history of
technology leading them back to prehistoric times. Students will research a block of time
that was impacted by technology and will create a timeline of the events.

Topic: U.S. History


Objective: Students will be taught the differences between the titles and roles of the men
and women who control government.
Materials: Chalkboard
Implemented: Students will identify men and women who are leaders in the world. They
will then travel back in time to early America and learn more about the countrys
beginning. Students will identify leaders of groups and organizations.
Topic: Art and Literature
Objective: Students will understand the history of fairy tales and how fairy tales continue
to link present times with the past.
Materials: Story books, pencils/ pens/ markers, butcher paper
Implemented: Students will read multiple short fairy tales and will identify the common
themes, plot, and literary elements that run through each story. Once they identify the
elements the students will be able to write their own short story and illustrate it.

Topic: Technology
Objective: Students will understand the modern day benefits of technology.
Materials: Research materials on the history of technology, computer with Internet access
Implemented: Students will be split into discussion groups to discuss the way they use
technology, they will then discuss the advancements that they feel are the most prominent
today. The class will then determine if they feel technology has made any negative
impacts on society.

Topic: Technology
Objective: Students will learn about famous inventors and how their inventions have
shaped communities.
Materials: Computer with Internet access, articles in periodicals
Implemented: Students will research the origins of everyday items. They will then be told
to specify what they want to learn about the items and will do Internet research to answer
their questions.

Topic: World History


Objective: Students will review facts about Egyptian civilization and will be able to
identify vocabulary terms pertaining to the civilizations.
Materials: Online Jeopardy chart, flashcards, white boards, and a buzzer.
Implemented: The class will begin with students reviewing vocabulary terms regarding
Egyptian civilizations via flashcards. They will then be split into two teams and the
teacher will collect their flashcards. The students will begin playing a game of Jeopardy
as a test review. The winning team earns one extra credit point added to their test.

Topic: Mathematics
Objective: Students will work in small groups to think of specific examples of how math
is an important part of their lives.
Materials: Paper, pencils, marker, poster board.
Implemented: Students will brainstorm aspects of daily life that include an aspect of
mathematics. They will then choose one event/aspect and explain the role that
mathematics takes. If they effectively describe an event that requires mathematic skills
they will receive points for presenting it to the class.

Topic: Technology
Objective: Students will be signed individual topics and they will learn how to research
their topic.
Materials: Computer with Internet Access
Implemented: Each child will be given an assigned topic and access to a computer. They
will be taught how to use various academic websites so that they can do a short
presentation on their assigned topic.

Topic: Art and Literature/History


Objective: Students will debate whether the legislation to protect elephants from ivory
hunters should be supported or not.
Materials: Computer with Internet access
Implemented: The students will vote to determine how many of them are in favor of
allowing the selling of ivory and how many are against. They will research via the WWF
website and learn about the effect that ivory poaching has on the cultures within Africa.
They will identify countries that have agreed to the protection of ivory and determine
what a possible argument against the protection might be.
