Teachers are like Personal Trainers

1. Assess their clients (students) 1. Learning is unique and different for

initial abilities and have all the each person, everyone is starting at a
right techniques to get them where different point with their own
they want to be (teach all the perspective (constructivist)
standards, have students pass
tests)

2. Social learning (modeling)

3. Social learning (motivation, growth
mindset)
2. Offer positive reinforcement,
guidance, demonstration and
instruction
3. Push individuals (students) further
than anyone would on their own
4. They know how to determine
where their clients (students) are
and how to engage their muscles
(brains) to grow

4. Muscles grow through repetition and

consistent use (information processing,
behavioral)
5. Positive reinforcement; shaping
behavior (behaviorism)

5. They push, train, yell, and then put

their arm around our clients
(students) to congratulate them on
a job well done
Links to Learning Theories
Information Learning occurs when there is a change in knowledge which is
Processing stored in memory, not just a change in behavior
Focuses on what goes on in the learners head and mental
processes, not just observable behaviors
Tools to help information become stored in long term memory:
Chunking
Linking concepts
Organizing info into efficient and meaningful ways
Real world examples
Discussions
Problem solving
Analogies
Imagery/visualization
Mnemonics

Behavioral New behaviors or changes in behaviors are acquired through

Theory associations between stimuli and response
Consequences that reinforce desired behavior are arranged to
follow the desired behavior (study for a test, get a good grade)
New behavioral pattern can be repeated to become automatic
Learning occurs when the individual has the change in behavior
Teachers use this when they reward or punish student behaviors
Examples:
Drill/rote work
Repetitive practice
Bonus points
Participation points
Reinforcements (i.e. good job, nice work)
Establishing rules
Downside: learners do as they are told, do not take initiative to
change or improve things. Learner is only prepared for recall of
basic facts, automatic responses or performing tasks

Constructivist We construct our own knowledge of the world based on individual

Theory experiences
Learning is based on how the individual interprets and creates
meaning of their experiences
Knowledge is constructed by the learner, learning is unique and
different for each person
Focuses on preparing people to problem solve
Examples and applications:
Case studies
Research projects
Problem based learning
Brainstorming
Collaborative learning
Discovery learning
Simulations
Social Learning is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context
Learning and can occur through observation or direct instruction, even in
the absence of motor reproduction or reinforcement
People learn through observing others behaviors, attitudes and
outcomes of those behaviors
Social learning theory explains human behavior in terms of
continuous reciprocal interaction between cognitive, behavioral,
and environmental influences.
Encompasses attention, memory and motivation
Necessary conditions for effective modeling:
Attention
Retention
Reproduction
Motivation

Reflective Statement for Metaphoric Model

SLO: Articulate worldview and perspectives for enhancing student learning.

Relevance: How does this assignment demonstrate your competence with this SLO?

This assignment demonstrates my competence with this slow because I am

taking each students unique abilities, strengths and weakness into account before
figuring out how to take them to the point that I want them to get at, which would be my
students understanding of all of the standards.

Significance: Explain the most significant aspect of your Metaphoric Model that you would
likely share with other professional educators. Justify your selection.

I feel as though the most significant aspect of my model would be to know how to
determine where their clients (students) are and how to engage their muscles (brains) to
grow. This is crucial to long term, personalized learning because teachers must take into
account where each of their students are in their understanding of the material. All of
them have had different experiences with education, and may or may not be at the same
level. By taking quick assessments at the beginning of each unit, we can understand
how to fit the needs of each student.

Growth Mindset: How does your model help you and your students develop a positive Growth
Mindset?

Students need a growth mindset in order to believe they CAN do something,

have a positive outlook, and change. I will guide my students to understand that
intelligence is not a fixed trait, and can be changed through hard work and consistency,
similar to physical fitness. Individuals with growth mindset tend to achieve more than
those with a fixed mindset, because they put more energy and effort into the process
(i.e. getting into shape or learning). The individual believes that superb personal qualities
can be learned, developed or cultivated. So, they view failure only as feedback about her
performance, and not as a judgment of their personality, potential or value.
Therefore, a person with growth-mindset feels eager to learn to boost her
performance and enjoys exploring, experimenting and stretching herself. They are not
sensitive to criticisms and setbacks dont hurt them so hard. I want to teach my students
to think of their efforts as a sign of strength not as a confirmation of shortcomings, as
well as to think of learning as a joyful and constructive process rather than a chore that
exposes your inadequacies.

Link to Theory: Describe/explain the theoretical/research base for your Metaphoric Model.

My metamorphic model links too all four of the learning theories and is broken down in
my actual model on page one. Each point of my model is representative of one or more
learning theories as described in pages two and three.

Successful Learning: How does your Metaphoric Model support successful/ brain compatible
learning?

Successful and deep learning occurs through repetition, consistence, and

pushing yourself (motivation). Just like how physical fitness requires a person to push
himself or herself over and over, learning requires a person to consistently and
repetitively review the information so it sticks in their long term memory.

Personalized Learning: How does you model accommodate personalized learning?

The great thing about my metamorphic model is that it focuses entirely on

personalized learning. Just as everyone hiring a personal trainer is at a different level of
fitness, every student is at a different level of knowledge. Every student is coming from a
unique educational background, and varies in their abilities. It is my job to assess their
abilities so I can focus on their strengths and scaffold students to the level I need them
at.

Reflective Practice:

As a means of understanding the learning process, I was able to retrieve information on

teaching and learning by looking back and reflecting on my experiences as a student, as well as
my moms experiences as a teacher and even my own while substitute teaching. I have been in
school the majority of my life, 18 out of the 23 years I have been alive. I have many experiences
with learning, both good and bad. The memories I was able to retrieve best were the ones
where learning was meaningful, and fit my personal needs as a student. I am also an active
individual, who enjoys going to he gym in my past time. I was able to connect the two
experiences together and was able to notice the similarities between teaching and personal
training. That is how I was able to create my Metaphoric Model!
