Some time ago the library
began to accept credit cards
for payments relating to library
services such as faxes, fines,
printing, etc. At that time it
was only available at the
library and there was a limit on
the amount you could charge.
In the last week, weve
changed to a different way of
accepting charges, and you
now have the ability to pay
fees through the library catalog
at home or at the library and
with no limit on the amount.
It works like this if you
have a fee, all you need to do
is access the on-line catalog at
home or here at the library, go
to your account, and pay the
charges with a credit or debit
card. If you want to charge
printing or scan/fax fees, we
will add it to your library card
account and then you can go
to the library catalog, log in,
and use your card. If youre at
home, type in either
www.matsugov.us/msln or
jlc-web.uaa.alaska.edu in a
search window on your
computer. From the msln
page, select the blue button on
the upper right of your screen
that says Search the
Catalog. From the jlc url, just
choose your home library from
the list given. Next go to the
upper right of the screen, click
on Log In. Type in your card
number and your PIN
(generally the last 4 digits of
your phone number), then click
on My Account on the upper
right of the screen and choose
and its Friends

the tab that says Fines. Select
Pay with credit or debit card.
The next page will allow you to
ask for an email receipt, and
enter your credit or debit
information just as on any
other website. Click submit,
and youre done! There is no
limit on the amount of a charge
with this system. For those
with no library card, but who
want to print or fax, we have a
way to do that as well.
Finally, this will be my last
month as the librarian here.
Its been both privilege and
pleasure to serve the
communities of the Upper
Susitna Valley. Ed & I are not
leaving, so though I may not
see you at the library, I will see
you further up the creek.
ANNS RETIREMENT
RECEPTION
We will be honoring Anns
years of service and
achievements on April 28th
from 5-8pm at Latitude 62.
Please join us on Anns first
day of official retirement. We
have also set up a Tribute
Fund in Anns honor to
purchase 3 shade trees for the
library grounds. Donations
can be made at the reception,
or at the library. Checks
should be payable to FOTL.
BOOK SPINE POETRY
CONTEST AND POETRY
AFTERNOON
The Friends of the Talkeetna
Library are sponsoring a
poetry contest to celebrate
April Poetry Month. Book
Spine Poems should be
composed of no more than 5
book spines that make a verse
when read. A photo can be
emailed to the library or the
librarians will take a photo at
the library of your creation.
There will be 3 categories
based on age: Adult, Teen, or
Younger than Teen. Entries
are due April 14th. Vote for
your favorite April 17-19th.
FOTL will host a poetry
afternoon on April 19th from 2-
4pm. Share your poem or a
favorite. Prizes will be
awarded for the Book Spine
top vote getters at the Poetry
Afternoon.

The Friends of the
Library will meet Friday, April
7th at 1pm at the library. All
are welcome.
STORYTIME
Story time is getting ready for
spring and summer! Join us at
11:45 on Thursdays. Children
of all ages are welcome.
April 6: Chickens rule the
roost
April 13: Easter Bunnies will
be hopping around the library
April 20: earth Day is Coming.
April 27: Gardens are on our
minds.
SUMMER READING
PROGRAM
Summer reading program will
kick off on June 1st with a
special movie and treats. The
summer program will meet at
12:45 pm on Thursdays
following lunch provided by the
Upper Susitna Food Pantry.
Yoga for Kids is on the
schedule too, thanks to a grant
from the Jessica Stevens
Community Foundation. Sign
up for Yoga for Kids begins
June 1st.
SUMMER LUNCH
PROGRAM FOR KIDS @
THE LIBRARY
The Upper Susitna Food
Panty will provide backpacks
for one week of breakfast and
lunch on Thursdays at the
Talkeetna Library this summer
starting the last week in May.
As of this writing, the plan
is that the food pantry will
provide lunch prior to the
Summer Reading program and
for the other days of the week
will make backpacks for
breakfast and lunch available.
No pre-registration or
identification is required for the
children. They will just sign in
when they pick up their
bookpacks.
TEEN BOOK 2 FILM CLUB
The Teen Book 2 Film Club
will hold its last meeting April
22nd from 6-9pm. They will
compare the book Paper
Towns by John Green to the
film. Snacks will also be
provided. If you have
questions about the club,
please contact Tasja at the
library.
TWEEN PAGE TO
SCREEN BOOK CLUB
The Tween Page to Screen
Book Clubs last meeting will
be April 8th from 5-8pm. The
tweens will be discussing and
comparing the book Inkheart
by Cornelia Funke to the film.
If you have questions about

BREAKFAST BOOK CLUB
The Breakfast book club
will meet Tuesday, April 11th,
at 9:30 am at the library. The
selected book is A Thread of
events leading up to the
Grace by Mary Doria Russell.
Copies are available at the
library. We will supply the
coffee or tea.
BOOK REVIEW

The LastStand by Nathaniel
Philbrick
views. This book was full of
Ive read numerous books
about Custers last stand
where Custers hubris and
arrogance gets his whole
regiment wiped out. This one
is pretty informative. It covers
many perspectives from
Custer and the officers under
his command to Sitting Bull
and Crazy Horse and the
various Indian tribes who
fought that day.
The story of this battle has
gone through any changes.
For a long time after the battle
took place, Custer was
depicted as a heroic figure.
But by the 60s and 70s, he
was practically vilified as an
egotistical madman who got
his men needlessly killed. As
usual, the reality is somewhere
in between these extremes.
There were heroes on
sides, soldier and Indian, and
there were also mistakes and
butchery on both sides. There
was a lot of animosity and
backstabbing going on within
Custers command, and orders
were either misunderstood or
reversed. But the primary
factor in this tragedy was
Custers ego.
The author gives a pretty
evenhanded depiction of the
debacle. He avoids finger
pointing and for the most part,
keeps his opinions out of the
narrative. All in all, I
thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Some books Ive read about
this event were all loaded with
facts; informative but dry. And
others were bombastic and
overindulged the authors
facts, but also a very enjoyable
read. Not too dry and
scholarly and not too much
bluster. As Goldilocks would
have said, it was just right.
