Rationale

Cebu Normal University and Korean visitors joined for a cultural

exchange event last August 9, 2016 at the Emma Center of the
university. The event promoted the friendship between the Koreans
and the Filipinos despite the differences. It aimed at breaking barriers
not only in education but also in the appreciation of each nations
culture. Spearheaded by Dr. Jennifer D. Pao, the graduating class of
Bachelor of Elementary Education Major in General Education took
part in the event. It started with the singing of the Philippine National
Anthem by the CNU Chorale followed by the singing of the Korean
National Anthem. The guests were welcomed by Professor Tizza Marie
Navarro who shared her experiences when she visited South Korea for
benchmarking. She also highlighted the significance of sharing in
building a better educational platform. After her opening remarks, the
centennial video Pagsugid was shown. It told the journey of Cebu
Normal University from good to great. The Korean visitors and the
Normalites themselves were astonished by the film. After watching
Pagsugid, Dr. Jennifer D. Pao took over to introduce the guests. In
turn, the team leader of the Korean visitors gave a short inspirational
message highlighting that friendship knows no race, knows no
language and crosses borders. Then an official video of the Korean
Tourism Organization with the tag line Imagine Your Korea was
shown. The Filipino attendees were enamored by the rich and colorful
culture of South Korea. Famous tourist destinations such as
Hwaseoung Fortress, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Garosu-gil Street
and Jejudo Island were featured in the video. The visitors then gave a
compelling dance of a Christian song. They also danced to the beat of
famous K-Pop songs and showcased their traditional clothes such as
the Hanbok, Jeogori and Baji. Afterwards, the Gen Ed students were
divided into groups for the activities. The students experienced drinking
Korean tea and Korean sweet cake. Other groups had calligraphy
writing and Hanbok fitting. The students also enjoyed playing Tuho, a
traditional game which requires players to throw sticks from a set
distance into a large, sometimes ornate, canister. After engaging in the
different activities, the students had their lunch with the Korean visitors.

Overall, the whole event was a success. The Gen Ed students

enjoyed and learned a lot from the experience. At the end, the
Normalites and the Koreans have built something beautiful and
unbreakable as a diamondfriendship.
