Rote Song Lesson Plan: Sailing in the Boat

Standards:
Students will develop and refine artistic work for presentation. (Anchor Standard
5)
Students will convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work. (Anchor
Standard 6)
Students will perceive and analyze artistic work. (Anchor Standard 7)

Behavioral Objectives:
The students will perform vocal sirens.
The students will sing and tap a steady beat to the song Sailing in the Boat.

Materials:
Sailing in the Boat American Folk Songs for Children pg. 160
Piano or other pitched instrument for starting pitch
Open space for movement

Procedures:
Opening:
The teacher will tell the students about how it is cold out side and she
wants to be on a beach.
The teacher will ask the students to stand up and pretend they are on the
beach and their hands are waves.
The teacher will perform a vocal siren while pretending to be a wave and
ask the students to echo. The students will echo
The teacher and students will perform several different vocal sirens (high
to low, low to high, high-low-high) together with assistance from the wave
visual.
The teacher will sing 3-note patterns taken from the songs on the neutral
syllable bum and use a kinesthetic arm movement to show the pitch
going up or down. The students will echo the pitch patterns and
movement.
Main Body:
The teacher will tell the students to sit down and that she is going to sing
them a song and ask them to listen and figure out what the song is about.
The teacher will play an F on the piano and sing to the students to keep a
beat and listen to my song.
The teacher will sing Sailing in the Boat and the students will keep a
steady beat in their laps.
The teacher will ask the students to touch their elbow to their knee if they
know what the song is about. The students will answer Sailing in a Boat
The teacher will ask the students to figure out when we are sailing this
next time.
The teacher will tell the students to keep a beat and listen to my song.
The teacher will sing the Sailing in the Boat again for the students and
the students will keep a beat in their laps.
The teacher will ask the students When are we sailing? The students will
answer When the tide runs high. The teacher will explain what a tide is
to the students who dont know.
The teacher will speak the words come bym bye in rhythm and ask the
students echo. The students will echo.
The teacher will tell the students that bym bye is just a shortened
version of the phrase by and by which means soon!
The teacher will tell the students to listen for the words come bym bye.

teacher will tell the students to stand up and check their singing posture.
The teacher will explain proper singing posture to the students as a
reminder.
The teacher will use her hands to point at herself and at the students and
say When Im pointing at you it is your turn, when Im pointing at me it
is my turn.
The teacher will divide the song into four short phrases. The teacher will
sing the first phrase, the students will echo.
The teacher will sing the second phrase, the students will echo.
The teacher will sing the third phrase, the students will echo.
The teacher will sing the fourth phrase, the students will echo.
The teacher will combine the four phrases into two longer phrases and
have tell the students that she is going to try to trick them and they should
listen longer.
The teacher will sing the first and second phrase together, the students will
echo.
The teacher will sing the third and fourth phrase together, the students will
echo.
The teacher will cue the students to pat the steady beat. The teacher will
sing the whole song, the students will echo.
If there are any trouble spots, the teacher will review those sections and
the students will echo.
The students will sing the song in its entirety with 75% accuracy, without
the help of the teacher.

Assessment/Evaluation:
The teacher will observe and listen to the students perform vocal sirens.
The teacher will ask questions about the lyrics of the song to measure the level of
engagement from the group.
The teacher will listen to the students sing Sailing in the Boat as a group
without the teacher to determine their knowledge of the song.
