Abstract. The worlds argasid tick fauna comprises 183 species in four genera, namely Argas,
Carios, Ornithodoros and Otobius in the family Argasidae. The ixodid tick fauna consists of
241 species in the genus Ixodes and 442 species in the genera Amblyomma, Anomalohima-
laya, Bothriocroton, Cosmiomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma, Margaropus,
Nosomma, Rhipicentor and Rhipicephalus in the family Ixodidae, with the genus Boophilus
becoming a subgenus of the genus Rhipicephalus. The family Nuttalliellidae is represented by
the monospecific genus Nuttalliella. The species names of these ticks, based on seven previous
complete or partial listings, as well as those of recently described new species, are presented
in tabular format.

Preamble
We believe that the animal known as the species exists in the world, and that
it can be given a name using binominal nomenclature. Only the species exists
in nature, and any organization above the species level is conceptual in the
mind of humans, and is pure semantics and does not exist in nature. There
are no subgenera, genera, subfamilies, families or orders scuttling around out
there on the ground, or questing on the vegetation or attached to hosts. But,
and this is where the crux of the matter lies, humans love organization, and
what better way to organize than to put objects similar in appearance in a
compartment with a particular name. However, when you convene a group of
The publication of this list has been facilitated by the International Consortium on Ticks
and Tick-borne Diseases (ICTTD-2) coordinated by Professor Frans Jongejan.
