Plan for Student Success

Horizon High School
Spanish 1 & 2
2017-2018

Dear Student and Parents/Guardians,

Bienvenidos a Espaol I & 2! I look forward to being your teacher this
school year as you begin studying the Spanish language. It may seem a bit
intimidating to learn a new language, but I hope to make your experience a
good one. You will need to keep up with your homework assignments, listen
and participate in class, as well as open up your mind to learn about the
many different countries and cultures that speak Spanish. Keeping up with
your work on a daily basis is essential to your success in this class.

Materials: 2 Composition Books (1 for vocabulary and 1 for Interactive

notebook)
3 ring binder with notebook paper (1/2 recommended) Spanish-English
dictionary-required
Prohibited: Translator Software sites of any kind are prohibited for use
on any assignments. (If used, this is considered cheating and student will
receive a "0" for the assignment)

Expectations:
1. Follow directions
2. Show respect for teacher and peers.
3. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
4. Always come to class prepared.
6. No cell phones

2. Grading:
Major 60%: A minimum of 4 each 9 weeks which includes all tests and
extensive projects.
Minor - 30%: A minimum of 10 each 9 weeks which includes
quizzes, weekly journals, oral participation and mini-projects.
Homework/Class work 10%

3. Tests: Tests will be given at the end of each unit and will cumulative, due
to the nature of the study of a foreign language.

Test Corrections: Students may make 2 test corrections for half

credit each 9 weeks. Students will be given up to 1 week to come outside
of class to make these corrections and may use notes, books and
Espaol 1 & 2
dictionaries. Students may NOT work with one another and will need to
explain why they think they made their mistakes when correcting.

4. Spanish Communication: Grade is based upon students being required to

speak in Spanish on average 5 times each week.

5. Quizzes: Quizzes should normally be assigned ahead of time, but

I reserve the right to give a pop quiz if necessary. There may be oral
quizzes given throughout the semester as well.

6. Homework: Homework will be assigned most nights and will be checked

daily. Students will be allowed to turn in assignments late but receive a
lower grade based on a graduated scale at the teachers discretion when
received.

7. Late work: According to the school handbook, students are to complete

any missed work when absent. Assignments given before the absence
are due back the day the student returns. If a test or quiz is missed,
the student has up to five days to make it up outside of class time.

8. Absences: You have as many days to make up work for an excused

absence as days missed. However, if you are aware of an upcoming
deadline and you leave for a school-sponsored activity, you will still be
expected to have your work ready the day it was originally due. You know
what work is due before you leave for athletic and club events.

9. Course Outline: Our vocabulary will include greetings and farewells,

telling time, days of the week, months, physical descriptions, weather,
likes and dislikes, family and school vocabulary, and learn about the
home. We will also learn how to use verbs in the present tense. They will
include verbs that are both regular and irregular. We will also study
geography as well as learn about the culture of other Spanish speaking
countries.

10. Leaving the classroom: Students who enter and leave during
instruction can be extremely disruptive. Therefore, do not interrupt the
teacher during a lesson to ask to leave unless it is an emergency. If the
teacher is not instructing the class, the student may do the following:

Present the Bathroom pass to the teacher for signature.

Get the hall pass from the teacher.
Quietly exit the room. When you return, please enter as quietly as
possible. The students will receive a bathroom pass allowing up to 3
passes.
Espaol 1 & 2
11. Tutoring: Tutoring will be offered most Wednesday afternoons right
after school or by appointment other afternoons if needed.

12. Grading Scale:

A= 90-100
B= 80-89
C= 70-79
D= 60-69
F= Below 60
