Storagetanksarecontainersthatholdliquids,compressed
gases(gastankorinU.S.A"pressurevessel",whichisnot
typicallylabeledorregulatedasastoragetank)ormediums
usedfortheshortorlongtermstorageofheatorcold.[1]The
termcanbeusedforreservoirs(artificiallakesandponds),and
formanufacturedcontainers.Theusageofthewordtankfor
reservoirsisuncommoninAmericanEnglishbutismoderately Sphericalgastankfarminthepetroleumrefineryin
commoninBritishEnglish.Inothercountries,thetermtends KarlsruheMiRO
toreferonlytoartificialcontainers.

IntheUSA,storagetanksoperateunderno(orverylittle)pressure,distinguishingthemfrompressurevessels.
Storagetanksareoftencylindricalinshape,perpendiculartothegroundwithflatbottoms,andafixedflangibleor
floatingroof.Thereareusuallymanyenvironmentalregulationsappliedtothedesignandoperationofstorage
tanks,oftendependingonthenatureofthefluidcontainedwithin.Abovegroundstoragetanks(AST)differfrom
underground(UST)storagetanksinthekindsofregulationsthatareapplied.

Reservoirscanbecovered,inwhichcasetheymaybecalledcoveredorundergroundstoragetanksorreservoirs.
Coveredwatertanksarecommoninurbanareas.

Storagetanksareavailableinmanyshapes:verticalandhorizontalcylindricalopentopandclosedtopflat
bottom,conebottom,slopebottomanddishbottom.Largetankstendtobeverticalcylindrical,ortohaverounded
cornerstransitionfromverticalsidewalltobottomprofile,toeasierwithstandhydraulichydrostaticallyinduced
pressureofcontainedliquid.Mostcontainertanksforhandlingliquidsduringtransportationaredesignedtohandle
varyingdegreesofpressure.

Alargestoragetankissometimesmountedonalorry(truck)oronanarticulatedlorrytrailer,whichisthencalled
atanker.

IntheU.S.,airemissions,whichcorrespondtolossesforusableliquidcommoditiesand/orsalableproducts,are
typicallyrequiredtoundergoairqualitypermittingundertheFederalCleanAirAct.Quantificationofpotential
emissionsforpermittingpurposesismostoftenaccomplishedbyapplyingemissionequationspublishedin
Chapter7.1oftheU.S.EPA'sAP42:CompilationofAirEmissionFactors.

Specialfeatures
Sincemostliquidscanspill,evaporate,orseepthrougheventhesmallest
opening,specialconsiderationmustbemadefortheirsafeandsecure
handling.Thisusuallyinvolvesbuildingabunding,orcontainmentdike,
aroundthetank,sothatanyleakagemaybesafelycontained.

Somestoragetanksneedafloatingroofinadditiontoorinlieuofthefixed
roofandstructure.Thisfloatingroofrisesandfallswiththeliquidlevel
insidethetank,therebydecreasingthevaporspaceabovetheliquidlevel.
Floatingroofsareconsideredasafetyrequirementaswellasapollution
preventionmeasureformanyindustriesincludingpetroleumrefining. Cylindricalfuelstoragetankwith
fixedroofandinternalfloatingroof.
IntheUnitedStates,metaltanksincontactwithsoilandcontaining Capacityapprox2,000,000litres
petroleumproductsmustbeprotectedfromcorrosiontopreventescapeof
theproductintotheenvironment.[2]Themosteffectiveandcommoncorrosioncontroltechniquesforsteelin
contactwithsoiliscathodicprotection.

Forrefineries
Tanksforaparticularfluidarechosenaccordingtotheflashpointofthatsubstance.Generallyinrefineriesand
especiallyforliquidfuels,therearefixedrooftanks,andfloatingrooftanks.

1.Fixedrooftanksaremeantforliquidswithveryhighflashpoints,(e.g.fueloil,water,bitumenetc.)Cone
roofs,domeroofsandumbrellaroofsareusual.Theseareinsulatedtopreventthecloggingofcertain
materials,whereintheheatisprovidedbysteamcoilswithinthetanks.Domerooftanksaremeantfortanks
havingslightlyhigherstoragepressurethanthatofatmosphere(e.g.slopoil).
2.Floatingrooftanksarebroadlydividedintoexternalfloatingrooftanks(usuallycalledfloatingrooftanks:
FRTanks)andinternalfloatingrooftypes(IFRTanks).

IFRtanksareusedforliquidswithlowflashpoints(e.g.,ATF,MS.gasoline,ethanol).Thesetanksarenothingbut
conerooftankswithafloatingroofinsidewhichtravelsupanddownalongwiththeliquidlevel.Thisfloatingroof
trapsthevaporfromlowflashpointfuels.Floatingroofsaresupportedwithlegsorcablesonwhichtheyrest.FR
tanksdonothaveafixedroof(itisopeninthetop)andhasafloatingroofonly.Mediumflashpointliquidssuch
asnaphtha,kerosene,diesel,andcrudeoilarestoredinthesetanks.

Oneofthecommontypesfoundinminingareasistheopenrooftypetank,usuallytostoreoreslurries.Theseare
theeasieststoragetankstobuild.

Anatmospherictankisacontainerforholdingaliquidatatmosphericpressure.Themajordesigncodeforwelded
atmospherictanksareAPI650andAPI620.API653isusedforanalysisofinservicestoragetanks.InEuropethe
designcodeisEurocode3(EN1993),part42.

Highpressure

Inthecaseofaliquefiedgassuchashydrogenorchlorine,oracompressed
gassuchascompressednaturalgasorMAPP,thestoragetankmustbe
madetowithstandthesometimesimmensepressuresexertedbythe
contents.Thesetanksmaybecalledcylindersand,beingpressurevessels,
aresometimesexcludedfromtheclassof"tanks".

Thermalstoragetanks
Horizontal,cylindricalshell,elliptical
Oneformofseasonalthermalenergystorage(STES)istheuseoflarge headscarbonsteelpressurevessel
surfacewatertanksthatareinsulatedandthencoveredwithearthbermsto
enabletheyearroundofsolarthermalheatthatiscollectedprimarilyinthe
summerforallyearheating.[3]ArelatedtechnologyhasbecomewidespreadinDanishdistrictheatingsystems.
Thethermalstoragemediumisgravelandwaterinlarge,shallow,linedpitsthatarecoveredwithinsulation,soil
andgrass.[4]

Iceandslushtanksareusedforshorttermofcoldforuseinairconditioning,allowingrefrigerationequipmentto
berunatnightwhenelectricpowerislessexpensive,yetprovidecoolingduringhotdaytimehours.

Milktank

Indairyfarmingabulkmilkcoolingtankisalargestoragetankforcoolingandholdingmilkatacoldtemperature
untilitcanbepickedupbyamilkhauler.Thebulkmilkcoolingtankisanimportantmilkfarmequipment.Itis
usuallymadeofstainlesssteelandusedeverydaytostoretherawmilkonthefarmingoodcondition.Itmustbe
cleanedaftereachmilkcollection.Themilkcoolingtankcanbethepropertyofthefarmerorbeingrentedtothe
farmerbythedairyplant.

Septictank

Aseptictankispartofasmallscalesewagetreatmentsystemoftenreferredtoasasepticsystem,.Itconsistsofthe
tankandasepticdrainfield.Wastewaterentersthetankwheresolidscansettleandscumfloats.Anaerobic
digestionoccursonthesettledsolids,reducingthevolumeofsolids.Thewaterreleasedbythesystemisnormally
absorbedbythedrainfieldwithoutneedinganyfurthertreatment.

Mobile"storage"tanks

Whilenotstrictlya"storage"tank,mobiletankssharemanyofthesamefeaturesofstoragetanks.[5]Also,they
mustbedesignedtodealwithaheavysloshingloadandtheriskofcollisionorotheraccident.Someofthese
includeoceangoingoiltankersandLNGcarriersrailroadtankcarsandtheroadandhighwaytravelingtankers.
AlsoincludedaretheholdingtankswhicharethetanksthatstoretoiletwasteonRVsandboats.

Materialsofconstruction
Whilesteelandconcreteremainoneofthemostpopularchoicesfortanks,glassreinforcedplastic,thermoplastic
andpolyethylenetanksareincreasinginpopularity.Theyofferlowerbuildcostsandgreaterchemicalresistance,
especiallyforstorageofspecialitychemicals.Thereareseveralrelevantstandards,suchasBritishStandard4994
(1989),DVS(GermanWeldingInstitute)2205,andASME(AmericanSocietyofMechanicalEngineers)RTP1[6]
whichgiveadviceonwallthickness,qualitycontrolprocedures,testingprocedures,accreditation,fabricationand
designcriteriaoffinalproduct.

Tankfailures
Therehavebeennumerouscatastrophicfailuresofstoragetanks,oneofthemostnotoriousbeingthatwhich
occurredatBostonMassachusettsUSAonJanuary14,1919.Thelargetankhadonlybeenfilledeighttimeswhen
itfailed,andresultingwaveofmolasseskilled21peopleinthevicinity.TheBostonmolassesdisasterwascaused
bypoordesignandconstruction,withawalltoothintobearrepeatedloadsfromthecontents.Thetankhadnot
beentestedbeforeusebyfillingwithwater,andwasalsopoorlyriveted.Theownerofthetank,UnitedStates
IndustrialAlcoholCompany,paidout$300,000(nearly$4millionin2012)incompensationtothevictimsor
theirrelatives.

Therehavebeenmanyotheraccidentscausedbytankssincethen,oftencausedbyfaultyweldingorbysub
standardsteel.Newinventionshaveatleastfixedsomeofthemorecommonissuesaroundthetanks'seal.[7][8]
However,storagetanksalsopresentanotherproblem,surprisingly,whenempty.Iftheyhavebeenusedtoholdoil
oroilproductssuchasgasoline,theatmosphereinthetanksmaybehighlyexplosiveasthespacefillswith
hydrocarbons.Ifnewweldingoperationsarestarted,thensparkscaneasilyignitethecontents,withdisastrous
resultsforthewelders.Theproblemissimilartothatofemptybunkersontankerships,whicharenowrequiredto
useaninertgasblankettopreventexplosiveatmospheresbuildingupfromresidues.
