Lesson
Children will be able to identify a circle, square, triangle and oval and match them.
Summary:
Estimated This lesson will take about three hours. I plan on dividing this lesson into fifteen
Duration:
minute sections over the course of a few days.

Preparatio What preparation is needed? Make copies of the shape matching document, enough for
n of each child in the class. Get iPads. Gather a variety of different objects in the shape of a
materials circle, square, oval and triangle. Get markers for children to use.
and
environme
nt What materials will be used? iPads, markers, matching sheets, real objects in different
shapes.

How will the learning environment be set up? This will begin as a group activity in the
group time area. Prepare a space large enough for the children to have room to sit and see
the teacher without crowding. The second part will be done individually at a small table
with one child at a time. The third section will be done throughout the classroom and
outside when the children hunt for items that are the shapes being talked about.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
15 minutes: The teacher will invite the children to gather in the group area. The teacher will
explain that they are going to be doing some activities with shapes. The teacher will ask children
to name some shapes that they know. The children will name shapes and give examples of
items that are that shape such as Circle, a ball is a circle.
15 minutes: The teacher will show the children a variety of objects that are circles, squares,
triangles and ovals. The children will name the shapes of the objects as the objects are shown.
75 minutes (15-minute introduction and 30-minute time for scavenger hunt with first group and
30 minutes for the second group): During this time the teacher will explain that they will be
doing a scavenger hunt and taking pictures of items of different shapes. This will be a small
group activity with only four children at a time. The teacher will tell the children that they will
hunt for objects around the building and outside on the playground and that the children will be
taking pictures with their iPads. The teacher will divide the group into sets of four and take the
first group of children on a scavenger hunt while the other group stays in the room for free play
time with the other teacher. As they walk around the building the children will point to objects,
identify what they are and take a picture using their own iPad. The children will be using the
iPads independently. They will find objects in the classrooms, kitchen, office spaces, playground,
and in the playground sheds. After about 30 minutes of searching, the children will go back to
the room and the second group will go with the teacher on a hunt.

Day 2:
30 minutes: At this time the teacher will gather the children from the first group and take them
to another room to share their photos with classmates. Each child will use their iPad to scroll
through their pictures and show their friends what they found. The children will comment on the
photos and talk about the different shapes.
30 minutes: The teacher will invite each child to work individually to drag and drop their photos
into a classroom folder on their iPads. The teacher will then put the pictures into a document
that can then be printed and displayed on the wall in the classroom, compiled into a classroom
book, and displayed in the hallway for documentation for parents to see.
30 minutes: The teacher will have the children come to a small table, one at a time, to do the
shape matching worksheet that she made using Power Point. The children will use the markers
to draw a line from the digital picture of a circle, square, triangle and oval to the matching ball,
watermelon, gift box and cone.
30 minutes: The teacher will use the Google Forms assessment sheet that she made to track the
progress of each child which can be used for portfolios or conferences. This will identify whether
each child can identify the objects, need help from a teacher or are unable to name the shapes
at this time.

Extension
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greysprings.kindergarten8&hl=en
The teacher will provide parents with a link to the Kindergarten Kids Learning App.
By using this app, children can practice their shape names by clicking on the different shapes.
When the child clicks on the shape, the app says the name of the shape. There is another game
where the child must match the shapes to the one that the turtle is holding. Another game is
one that the child must move the correct shapes into the robots body.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated

(changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: For children that
struggle with this activity, another matching sheet could be made where the child must match
the exact picture from one side of the paper to the other (same triangle, same color). For more
advanced children, they could go into the program, Paint and draw the shapes that they know
and tell the teachers what shapes they made or they could go into a Word document and use the
insert tab to create their own robot or building using the different shapes in this program.

Vocabulary: circle, triangle, square, oval, cone, sphere, mouse, cursor, folder, camera

For teachers You will need a computer to create a document using Power Point, Word, Google
Forms. A printer or copier will be needed to do the matching sheets for the
children and to do the documentation of the photos. Ipads will be needed for the
children to use to take the pictures.
For students The children will use the iPad for taking pictures and emailing them to the
teacher. Then the children will use the computer to drop and drag the photos to
the folder on the computer. The children will use the computer or iPad to play the
games on the Kindergarten Kids Learning app and also use the Paint and Word
program on the computer to draw and create robots or buildings.
